Location: Somewhere around here | I have an odd question and I can't really find any information about it. I have a 5 year old sorrel but in the last few months he's been getting some white hairs. He's got two spots on his left side on his barrel, and one that's more roan like on his shoulder by his withers. I know it's not a saddle sore spot because my saddle doesn't ride up on his shoulders. On his right side he has some roaning on his flank but then on his shoulders again but this time it's closer to his chest. He also has one spot right above his tail. He's fully quarter horse so I know this isn't any appy coloring.
His dad is a red roan (so was his grandfather) but his mom is a plain sorrel. I know when you register a foal is should already be roan-y but is my sorrel turning into a roan at the age of 5?? |

Location: TN | Very interesting! My bf's solid bay appaloosa mare and my bay QH gelding both have developed a few white hairs in the flanks as they've aged. I didn't know it had an official name. Thanks for the info!  |

What other white markings does the horse have? Lots of white on the legs, head, chin and white sclera are all traits of sabino. In maximum expression a sabino will have a belly spot as well. |

Can they have both Oregon? Hooker has the heavy white from the flanks and tailhead but she also has the white spot on her belly and white hairs throughout her sides, part of the front and belly area. |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | Yes they can. Many horses have multiple genes that modify the base colors. They can have several. My neighbor had a stud that carried the base color of black and red. Red is recessive so the black based color showed. He also had dun, dilute, agouti (bay) and roan (rabicano). He threw babies out of bay and red mares that were every color listed above. He appeared to be buckskin with a dorsal and barring. |

It sounds like my horse is turning into a rabicano! The only white markings he has on him is a small star on his forehead and one white sock. Definitely no extra white on him anywhere. I'll have to look up the different levels of rabicano. I wonder if they just get more and more white hair in winter, in summer, and as they get older. |
