Im thinking of having my mill mix up some grain for me. I have had my 6 year old mare on Nutrena perform and she kept good weight on it. I liked that it had 9% fat but name brand feeds are so expensive. She isn't a very easy keeper. She gets nice aflafla hay and I have her on equipride and ground flax. I want my mix to have high fat. not sure about what I should ask for protein or fiber content? so those that mix your own what do u put into it and what % of fat/protein/fiber and whatever else do you put into it?

There is really so much more to a balanced feed than just fat% and protein%. You have all the vitamins and minerals, lysine etc. I would rather pay the higher cost and let the experts do the mixing. They have nutritionalists to back their products. Otherwise keep it simple and do oats and maybe a ration balancer.

that is why im feeding the equipride as a top dress. shouldn't that cover the vitamins/minerals that she needs?

I would think so. Sorry I missed that you fed that. I tried it once top dress and didn't see any diff and it is hard to get in my area. I haven't used it again. I hear good things about it though.

I love it and my mare loves it. I liked her on the nutrena perform but it is almost $20 a bag. I was hoping that the mill could mix me something but not sure of what to ask for. I would like the fat to be around 8-10% but not sure what to ask for for protein and fiber. Trying to find something to feed her that wont break the bank. I also don't like to feed a lot of grain. most feeds say you need to feed a lot! fat supplements are expensive too. Progressive has one but it is $35 for a 40lb bag which I have used.

I don't like much corn, but I think you have to have some in there to get the protein/fat where you would want it. I would get beet shreds for fiber. It will probably be an oat based grain. Just throwing some ingredients at you, not sure what would be the best way to mix it % wise.

thank you. im not much for corn either.... fat seems to be very expensive when you are trying to add it to a horses diet. I was looking into rice bran too but anything I find is $30 or more for a 40lb bag also.

rice bran is good I have heard, but can also be hard on horses with metabolic disorders (insulin resistance) and you may not know they have this issue until they founder from the rice bran. I  have steered clear since. I wonder if you could try Amplify from Purina. I have had great great luck feeding it to my husband's old horse. He just gets a small 1/2 of the provided cup am and pm. I think 40# is about $40 but it does go a long way.

unfortunately she doesn't like cool calories. :( I was hoping that the mill could mix me something up fairly cost effective but it doesn't seem like many people use the mill.

Your mill should be able to come up with something for you if you just tell them what you are wanting. I use a local feed store that mixes my feed and when I need to make a change they are right on it.
