Veteran Posts: 170	What do you prefer in your stalls? In our old barn we had chat covered with mats then used the pelleted bedding. Where we moved to it was used for cutting horses and they kept sand in the stalls. I'm not liking it because it smells terrible! You can't get all the urine out. We were wondering if the stall skins are better than mats.

Expert Posts: 1367 Location: mi	I have not used the stall skins but have done alot of reading on them as they sound great. BUT from what I have read getting the stall set up prior to installing is most important. You have to have super good drainage under the mats as they allow the urine to go through them which is good and saves bedding but then you have to get it to go far enough away that its not just going into the flooring directly under the mats and hanging out there.

Bulls Eye Posts: 6443 Location: Oklahoma	I used stall skins when they first came out. I liked the fact that the stalls stayed dry. It allowed the moisture to go through to the bottom, but not puddle up. I used them in Southern California in an open outside stall. I also bedded with Ceda Rest that dried after the rain. Now I have dirt floor. I strip my stalls once a week and sprinkle lime dust on the floor to take away the urine smell. If you use lime on stall mats it will eat through the mats after time. I do have a stall mat under the feeder though so my guys are not eating off the ground

	We have concrete in our stall floors and we started out with 3/4" rubber mats. Those were a pain because the urine would get down between them and smell - so we would have to pull them all out to get the floor cleaned underneath. We switched to Stable Comfort mats several years ago and LOVE them. They are literally mattresses (crushed rubber) under a solid top piece. Comfortable for the horses, easy to clean, and no urine soaking under neath. The were pricey but definitely worth it. http://www.stablecomfort.com/index.php/products/show/stablecomfort/

Elite Veteran Posts: 897 Location: East Tennessee	I do love our mats. We have the ones with the holes in them for better drainage and then have lime and gravel under that. With all that said mats are heavy and can be $$$ depending on how many stalls and how large. Our mats have been in place for 30yrs (bought the place about 11 years ago) and they are starting to bunch up and break in certain spots. We have to several times a year pull the mats up and level the stall floors to keep them from bunching(especially if you have a stall walker). I have priced the same mats we have and will definitely have to be saving for a while to replace all the stalls. I would rather have then than not even with all the cons but I would recommend getting the ones with the drainage holes.
