| Which would you use or prefer of the 2 choices? Nutrena Safechoice Perform or Purina Omelene 200. Sure that this has been discussed before. |

out of those two, I would pick the safechoice and add a fat supplement. |

| Thanks for the replies. Also, what types and dosages are you giving a day of the fat supplements. |

| I don't feed either.. My horse would choke on pellets. BUT if I did I would feed the safe choice. Much lower in NSC than the Omolene. Although when I did feed the Omolene my horse looked great. I fed the 200. He got kinda lazy on it. Has plenty of energy with the Triple Crown Senior. |

Clappy hands! Lol.
The SafeChoice is a better feed, IMHO. I'm not a fan of sweet feed. Period. |

| I feed the SC Perform and absolutely love how my horses are doing on it. I feed it with FORCO and they have free choice bermuda/prairie mix hay, and also have an Equilix tub out with them 24/7. |

Location: Southern OK aka God's Country | If I recall Omelene has a lot of starch in it, and from what I've been told starch can build up in the back muscles and cause soreness issues. I would look into something with more fiber and fat, such as Strategy Healthy Edge or Ultium (only if you ride a lot, Ultium made my horses obese!) for Purina. I can't vouch for Nutrena, never tried it. Side note--I do feed my babies Ultium Growth and they do really well on it, no fatness issues. I have never really owned a hard keeper though, so I can't say what would work best for one of those. |

Location: Oz, Kansas | I love Safechoice Perform & have been feeding it a few years to my daughters colic prone horse with no problems, knock on wood. I also love that it still comes in a 50lb bag whereas Omolene is only 40lbs. I haven't added any supplements yet because he's doing so well as is. |

Not to be argumentative, but just a note: According to my dealer price sheets, ALL Omolene products are 50# bags with the exception of the 400, which is a 40# bag. The OP asked about 200, which is 50#. |

Location: Sunny California | As someone else said 2 totally different feeds. If you want to compare apples to apples then Purina Strategy Healthy Edge is more similar to the Safechoice. I have not fed the Safechoice (but a friend does and likes it) but I have fed Strategy Healthy Edge and my gelding did well on it. |

Location: southeast Texas | I feed the Special choice special care. Low NSC. I fed most of what has been sugested on this post. My horse was a looney tune. With is extra supliments (things he needs for his extra problems) I add water and stir. He licks it right up. For my mare, she gets Purina Welsolve L/S. (low starch) Even on the Special care she had ouchy muscles, mild but still ouchy. this went away with the welsolve. With water added it breaks down the pellets to a mash. She lick it right up..Takes her a little longer,,,, though. I add powdered coconut oil to both these horse for their fat. |

Sorry I fed the 400 & it was a 40lb bag just assumed that they were all that size. |

Location: Fort Collins, CO | neither. I'd go with Purina Ultium and you don't have to add a fat supplement and it's fairly low in NSC (16%). You won't have to feed a lot of it so top dress a vitamin/mineral supplement and you're good.
I do not like Nutrena feeds and I don't like the Omolene's as much--higher starch, lesser quality line. Ultium is my pick! |

| I agree with what many people are saying in that it isn't fair to compare these to products. Go with Strategy Healthy Edge or if your horses is a hard keeper opt for Strategy Gx or even Ultium. All are great products that are under 18% NSC and work well for performance horses.
As far a Nutrena Vs. Purina I would always choice Purina. They do the research and are the leaders in the feed industry. if you don't believe me just go visit their website and learn more about there research farm. No other company has a facility like this. I always choose a company that is know for quality and not a company that is always preaching their products are just like Purina's only cheaper....I wonder why they are cheaper? |

Location: Mid-Michigan | I personally prefer Nutrena Safechoice. Slightly lower in starch than the Purina and the Perform is a 9% fat, so you shouldn't have to add too much extra. |
