My sister got a new puppy about a month ago. She was 8 weeks old when she got her and at the time she started getting sick had two of her required shots. One day my sister woke up and Lexie, the puppy, was extremely lethargic, had goopy eyes, and a very high fever (104.8).  She needed help even standing or walking. They took her to the vet and got fluids in her, started her on antibiotics and started running tests. All of the preliminary tests came back negative and her CBC was normal. Took her home and within two days she was back to normal, playing and being a puppy. Then all of a sudden within a couple hour period she spiked a high fever again, (still on antibiotics) this time showing no other symptoms. My sister took her back to the vet, more tests were run and everything has come back negative. She's spent the last two days at the vets hooked up to an iv drip while they try to figure this out.

Has anyone heard of such a thing?  My sister is beside herself. She's over $1400 into a lab mix $100 puppy. Also, she contacted the breeder and no other puppies have had issues.

Yes, she's being watched very carefully because they're so worried about her.

A blood culture as well as a urine or fecal culture may be able to give them an answer as to what is causing the fever.  Maybe an abdominal ultrasound or chest x-ray as well?  Sounds like a real puzzle . . . prayers or the puppy and I hope they get the answers they're looking for soon.

Corona virus has very similar symptoms to parvo and can make a puppy very sick!

X-rays & ultrasound can be effective to see if any of her organs are compromised or if theres a foreign body in her.

Keep treating her, support her immune system with IV fluids (SQ, if you can't afford IV), antibiotics (this varies from vet to vet, but sometimes cefazolin IV is really effective).

Unfortunately, this is the ugly part of getting a new puppy. Not all of them go through being a puppy without being sick and sometimes without survival. :/

If this continues she may need to make a tougher choice and after recovering try again with a new puppy.
