I have one insulated water bucket that I went and bought before the cold weather hit, I have two more on order. So far-I LOVE IT!
Just about no ice in the bucket with these super cold temps. The top has a few ice chips in it, but that is it.
I would rather have the insulated buckets for peace of mind...I would A.
)worry about fire hazard or B.
) Worry about them getting shocked/chewing the cord in some way.
where are you getting yours?

I have these work great in the barn, even with it being 0 here today. I don't trust any of mine with a cord.

ETA: Mine are this brand I believe but I sure didn't pay that much, we have had them a long time.

I used the electric water buckets for years when I only had one horse now we moved and have 3 horses and no outlets close to the stalls. So we bought these and they are awesome. They don't use any electric so that saves money and I don't have to worry about anyone chewing on the cords. I would highly reccomend someone buying these. I just went to the barn and there was only a slite skim of ice on the lid but a horse could break it real easy. We have the one in the top link. We didn't pay nearly that much for them. We got them from Straight A's Ranch Supply
(ranchcity.com
)
Two things- ideally I dont want any ice- in order to keep them drining but I guess a thin coat is better than the heavy thick ice. But I love the warm water provided by the electric.
My second issue is with these 5 gallon buckets, my horse cant get his head all the way down to the bottom so it doesnt seem great to me?
I do love the fact of no electric but those are my concerns.
We have a 34yrs old 17 hand Hanovarian mare and trust me she has a HUGE head and she drinks out of these buckets just fine. And yes they do drink them down in 12 hours but thats not a problem for us because we are in and out so much. But I also like giving them fresh water more often. Which I know some people are not able to do. I like being able to keep track of how much they drink.

From a family friend. They have a small tack shop inside their indoor arena. They are the cheapest I could find...about $70.00 bucks.
I bought my current one from the feed store I work at in the summers for about $82.00.
If you want I could put you in contact with this lady. She may be willing to ship?
