So I guess I got my answer! With almost 1,000 views, and only a few answers, I guess a sound barrel horse is a unicorn. I'm so glad it's not just me. :) Thanks for the replies you guys!

Mine has never taken an unsound step in his life.
He is a 1D horse in Canada
I swear he is sound because hes not conformational "Perfect" He is toed out on the back end.
He was started as a long yearling, then raced on the track & started on barrels when he was 3
His feed is nothing special, he gets sweet-feed and whole oats with propel and 70% alfalfa mix hay.
I use a witch dr on him lol she is an equine sports therapist and is amazing, he might get a back on track blanket every so often but thats it,
His living arrangements change, when hes at my moms he is on 80 acres, when i am boarding him hes in a medium size pen but he is ridden 6 days a week.
He gets hauled to jackpots 2 days a week in the winter, in the summer he is a rodeo horse, my mom ran him sr pro and i go ammeture on him.

I think teehaha said it best with these two statements.
I think the big thing that has contributed to her good health is that she has been treated like a horse all her life. The better the conformation the sounder they are going to stay IMO.

Matt and I went horse shopping/looking yesterday and I was excited that almost all the racehorse prospects/ex-racehorses at the place were in a pasture or a big outdoor pen. Only three were in run-in stalls. That is the place my sorrel horse came from and so far he's bulletproof, but I think he was treated like a horse and not coddled as a youngster. When you kick them out on a 20-acre pasture with timber, creeks, etc., they learn to watch where they step and take care of themselves plus they're living like a horse is designed to, grazing and walking all day long.
