Ok u guys i m sitting here just about sick to my stomach and very upset.  I just got a call that our friends house just burnt.  She made it out fine as well as their kids and the kids she babysits. Their dogs did not make it.  You could see them in the front window looking out.  The fire department  would not break the window nor let her husband try to go in or break the window. Told him if he went any closer than the neighbors house they would have him arrested. Those dogs meant a lot to them. I just have their faces in my mind looking out at her and him like mom dad help us.  I am near tears. I am sick, I cannot imagine how they feel knowing how I feel. I do not know what words to use when I see them as i was speechless on the phone.

I would have told that bleeping fire fighter to go ahead and call the cops, then I would have yanked his ax crow bar or whatever out of his hands and went and broke that window! If my kids were safe, my dogs are like my babies too. I would not have watched them burn and I would have been a mom in a wrath of fury that one would have known not to mess with! I am so so sorry for your friends. It makes me teary eyed to even think about it!

You and me both.  I am sure he will feel the same and the guilt even worse later today. but the shock they must have been in and the helplessness they must have been feeling i m sure was making them not think to clearly.

Without knowing the extent of the fire, I would not jump to conclusions....however, have you not heard of "flashover"? The firefighter's first response is to save HUMAN life. Perhaps the fire was too the point of a risk to human life IF they broke the window and let oxygen fuel it into a "fire bomb"........Would you rather the person OR a fire fighter trying to save that person die?

I do not believe the house was going to blow.  I am sure someone will get on here and dispute that claim and I do understand that the fire department has to play it safe but come on it was a large picture window at the front of the house with there front door right there as well.  I hate to question the FD, but I am in this case. Same fire department also let my BIL's dog perish in a fire. I think we may have to start a petition to get them interested in saving pets to.  They are family to.  I just want to go home get my girls and bring them to work with me like every day now. I sound like i m becoming the crazy dog lady.  I also hate to judge my friends as i know these were their babies to, that is y i kinda need to vent on here before i go over there and see them face to face on my lunch hour. i dont want to say the wrong thing in my own frustration.

My house burned down about 8 years ago.  I thank God for the firefighters who put their lives on the line to try and save everything that they could.  Luckily, we were able to get our dogs out of the house.  I can understand why you might make a comment like you did, but you do not know the situation.  Breaking the window could have added more oxygen to the fire and may have caused a backdraft that would have instantly killed the dogs anyway.  It could have caused the fire to intesify and put the firemen or a neighbor's house in danger.  You just don't know the circumstances.  I do know this - THERE HAD TO BE A GOOD REASON.  Firemen are human too and no one would want to see a family's dog burn alive, especially those in a profession that are taught to save lives.

This. My dad is a career firefighter, and I know he has cried many times over animals that couldn't be saved, for whatever reason. Firefighters are humans, they love animals too. They've also spent years studying fire behavior and the dynamics of a burning building. It is possible that if they would have broken that window it could have caused an explosion and seriously injured/killed whoever broke it.

I agree that this is a terribly sad situation and a horrible thing for a family to have to witness. But, if you ask those kids in a few days, weeks, months, years - "Would you rather have Fido or Daddy today?" The answer would be Daddy.

I'm sorry for your friends' losses; but please don't be angry with the firefighters - they do everything they can to keep people safe in some very scary moments. Personally, I would be writing a thank you card.
