The only time the blanket comes off is when it's warm enough that he would sweat if I left it on. We don't have extreme cold at all here, but if it drops below 25 at night or is supposed to rain and immediately drop to low temps I'll shut him up in the barn. Other than that he's on full turnout.

The blankets and sheets do keep the hair down and polished.   It is more work and expense!

This is a bad time of the year trying to slick one up, why dont you wait untill spring befor trying to take their warm coat off? And Healthy Coat is a great supplement that I use.

I want to get a head start, plus its not cold here! lol

I think the OP is spot on with asking for advice now....whatever she starts feeding now will really start taking effect about the time her horses start shedding their winter coats and nothing she starts feeding will make the horse lose his winter coat before he needs to. My advice is to use good horse minerals and ground flax and oil such as DAC oil or Healthy Coat. Oh and blankets DO really keep them smooth and shiny during the winter.

Here's the most recent pic I have, it’s not a good one but you can kinda see what I’m talking about. This was just after a short ride too so she’s a super hot mess lol

I’m in the process of getting her back into shape as well, she’s been off for a while.

Where do you live? The pictures look like where I used to live.  And I used to live in Edinburg, Texas down in the Rio Granda Valley..
