Thoughts and opinions on stress and the work place.  Do you think it can physically work on a person to the level the money isn't worth it.  my mother is in a stress filled job and the pitiful amount she makes I think isn't worth the toll it is taking on her but the job market stinks.  I think she should get out and budget in the loss or look ot start up something of her own.
Can anybody relate?

Yes I definitely think stress has a physical affect. My dad is 63 and has never been sick. He's very strong, fast, and works like a 20 year old. He's never exercised but he is super laid back. My brother and nephew are in their 40's and 20's and can't hang with dad...and they stay stressed. I think stress, and lack thereof, is part of the difference. Tell her its not worth the toll it could take on her health.

NO job is worth being miserable... I'd say she needs to find something new and fast!! You only live once and if this job is making her miserable it's also making her unhealthy, stressed and she is wasting her life. Best wishes that she finds the right thing to do :( been there, done that, it IS NOT worth it!

I hated my last job SO bad, I often hoped I would hit a deer on the way to work so I could go to the hospital instead of work - SERIOUSLY! I am SURE it is NOT good for you physically!

I definitely believe that life is too short to stay in a job that makes you miserable. On the subject of stress though, here is a TED talk on stress that I just recently watched and it is very interesting. Recent studies have shown that stress is only bad for you if you believe it is bad for you, if you view it as a challenge and your body preparing you to take on your challenges your physiological response actually changes and it can be of benefit. It is definitely worth a watch.... http://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_fr...

Thanks everybody for the replies.  Ive been there too and was better off leaving my old job.  She is never sick and now seems to always feel bad.  At least I didn't get sick.

A certain amount of stress is good--energizes you, helps you tackle difficult projects, etc. However, the effects can be cumulative and eventually wear a person's body down and create health issues. Been there, done that. Especially if the job is not feeling rewarding or reasonably content to do that job, it is definitely time for a change.

I spent 15 months in a not so great job situation that was very stressful.  Horses have to eat so I have to work.  Have been at new job for 3 full weeks an I am finally recovering.  I've unpacked boxes and cleaned today.  I was too mentally and physically exhausted to do anything much at home before.  Next goal is to get back in the saddle.........

So if work is not necessary and is stressful, I'd have to quit.

Yes. A stressful job can impact someone mentally and physically.
