I've been looking at different barrel trainers and watching different horse they've trained. I have yet to find anything in my budget that I'm happy with. My goal for when hubby retires from the military is to breed raise and train my own. Not a big deal just a handful a year. I was telling hubby my issues with sending my horse off and having someone else do everything. His response, " why don't you do it? That's what you want to do in the long run and you'll have to start at some point." So,......well......dare I say it, he's right. Any pointers for a first timer? I've finished and seasoned and I've done quite a bit of rehab. However, I've never had one that wasn't atleast started on the pattern.

If you've never started one from scratch, I would recommend working under a trainer for that part. At least for the first few horses. I find it very helpful to have another set of eyes for the very beginning and then again for fine tuning.

I've always trained, patterned and finished my own. I came across Paul Humphrey a few years ago and I can't say enough about his program. He has a new DVD out and I just finished watching it today. You won't go wrong getting it and incorporating some of his program.  Working with a trainer isn't always feasible due to life.

I agree its tough finding a trainer you can mesh with. I too am hoping start training and selling 2 or 3 a year in the hopes of eventually quitting my city job. I'm working towards it as I presently work 3 days a week and commute 1 hour each way. Hate it. I've requested to go to 2 days, I've bought a barrel prospect with sole purpose of training and planning to sell once she's running nice.

Good luck.

I'm hoping I'll get to ride under one this summer when I start him but I may have to go with videoing myself.
