classicpotatochip - 2014-01-29 7:40 AM Doesn't depo wreck your reproductive system if you stay on it longer than 3 years? I was on it and could not control my weight gain. I also felt moody and overreactive a LOT! I really love the no hormone Paraguard. Lost 30 lbs in 6 months after stopping and felt mentally better 30 days after stopping. It wasn't my cup of tea.

I never got any weight gain from being on the depo, but everybody's body is different. I think I remember my doctor telling me the Depo also helps prevent cervical cancer.

I was on the depo shot for 30 years...was great for me...helped my monster headaches....stopped the cramps and Dr Jeckell/Mr. Hyde syndrome...and best of all, no period.

I'm pregnant with my second (due in August); I will be 23 when Eggbert is born and will be having my second c-section. I will also be having the tubal ligation done at that time. My husband and I have talked a lot about this. Due to high-risk conditions (Pre-E/HELLP), it wouldn't be very safe or easy for me to go through another pregnancy. So I'm taking it off the table.

If we ever decide that we NEED to have another child we will either A: adopt, or B: use a surrogate.

Best of luck!

I wondered this as well... My friend had the Mirena and liked it, and I have another friend with Nuva Ring- anyone try that? My lovely husband won't be getting snipped lol, but I don't want my tunes tied either, although we really want to wait a while after this one! At least 3-4 years. So I am looking into options for long term bc too!

blyellowrose - 2014-01-28 8:19 PM I have been on the depo shot for 11 years now! It is awesome! No monthly to worry about, don't have to worry about getting pregnant, no more cramps! Just get a shot in the hip 4 times a  year! If I remember to take advil before my appt, not even sore!
Have you ever taken time off the shot? Just being concerned here, my sister was on the shot for about 8 years I think, give or take a few. She didn't take any breaks from it and she's paying the price now. :( She didn't have a period the entire time she was on it.  When she got married, she decided to go off of it. It'll be 2 years in March that she's been off of it and she's had maybe 3 periods since then. Her dr told her it was from being on the shot so long, her hormones are waaaaaaaaaaaay out of wack. He's hoping with time, she will level out, but said that it's possible that she won't be able to have children.

I had been on the depo shot for  15 years. Went off of it and got regular periods after about 6 months. I stayed off of it for about a year, and hated having my "monthly time" So I went back on and have been back on it now for 3 more years. I love that I dont have to deal with periods ever!! But then I have 3 kids and when I had my last, which was c section I wanted my tubes tied and my dr wouldnt do it. I knew I was done!! Kinda makes me angry that I am having to pay for birth control now!!
