My opionion: Papers can def  help one, but their ability should outshine papers. I have witnessed folks in my area give considerable amounts of money for grade horses, because they were down right good! It all depends on the the buyer ultimatly. There are those who feel papers are extremely important, and those who dont mind buying a grade. For open rodeos horses arent required to be registered. That audience may be more forgiving  as long as the horse can prove itself. I agree with what some of the ladies have already said Next time someone asks about her ask them "what is she worth to you?"

The show bill on the arena I run those times say the arena is 100x 200 if that helps? I have a few videos if I can email them to someone. I can't upload them

Out of curiosity what arena in Ohio is it?

There is some pretty stiff competition in Ohio at the larger super shows. I doubt it is standard pattern I don't know of any arenas that run a standard pattern in these parts.

TheOldGrayMare - 2014-02-06 1:08 PM I've got someone who will offer you $100K right now if your mare is running under 17 seconds on a standard pattern.

Sorry, way OT, but there is a horse for sale on BHW right now that I have seen, in person, run just under 17 seconds on a standard pattern. Not my horse, but I did in fact see it run that time. Proving it would be hard because all I have is what I saw and wrote down as it was a local NBHA jackpot and they never put the horses' names with the riders here, not even for accumulative (sp?) points. But it may have been a one time thing, who knows.

BTW, to the OP, a grade horse around here is a hard sell too. I would say, even as nice as she sounds, $5000 tops. JMHO.

My current arena is 100x200 ... usually you're on a 15, low 16 second pattern... not close to standard

In our area we have some people breaking into the 14's in 100x200 with the first and second 15 feet of the fence 30 off of 3rd, with a 40 foot score.

The fastest I believe they have seen at Ruggles is 15.9. So she isn't far behind. She is always at least in the 2nd division and last year towards the end of the year I felt she was really coming into herself and getting stronger, faster and more consistent. She may not be the fastest but she is up there and last season I got money almost every run.

I appreciate everyone's input so far! She isn't something special but she's pretty cool and I hope to hang on to her but you never know when I might need to sell or if someone offers something I might need to consider.

No papers is a big deal if the horse is not winning. Winning makes all that go away. I know of a grade gelding that sold for $30,000 over 30 years ago. Now, he was a badass and won with anyone that threw a leg over over him and in any event. That was back when AQHA shows were a big deal too. If had papers back then the sky would have been the limit on his value. Now that AQHA shows have been relegated to almost nothing the papers are the same. If the horse can win, that is.

I have had lots of horses and there are some you sale and those special ones you keep, money is just that... money, if she makes you happy, why would you sell, don't get me wrong, my husband and I have made lots of money on horses but there are ones you sale and ones you keep. I have a few that will never leave my barn,
One is a 22 year old gelding that ran with the best of them at the ammy's and pro rodeos. I was offered lots of money for him several times, he gave me his heart and soul, he loved his job, he's been retired for a few years now I still ride him because he loves to be rode and he will be taken care of for the rest of his life and I know that because he is still here with me, I owe him that for the happiness he gave me not for the money he won or would have brought if I had sold him.. As I said money is just money some things you can't put a price tag on

I'm not planning on selling but I got to thinking what I would even sell her for if it came to that. I would never expect to get A LOT of money out of her. I actually was expecting less than $5,000 which most of you seemed to bring up. Right now she has a spot in my barn for as long as she's Alive but you never know.
