Location: TEXAS		 Went to a barrel race last Saturday smoked a run, no signs of lameness anywhere. The next day went to warm up for another run and my mare was lame on left back leg she moved like she had a hitch in her hip. She is barefoot only on the back. And the day before she slipped on some slick hard ground. There has not been any swelling or heat in her left stifle but she is still lames and is short stepping with that leg. I have a chiro appt scheduled for thos Saturday. But, I'm concerned it's something more than a pulled stifle. Could someone please tell me the acute symptoms of a strained or torn stifle? Thank you any info is greatly appreciated.

The stifle is held in place by muscles only ... so with the slip ... you could be dealing with a strained stifle ligament, a strained muscle, a stifle joint that has dropped due to a strained muscle or a twisted hock and even a sore hip joint/pelvic ...... it is very tuff to diagnose these areas since the soreness, pain or fluids tend to drop downward from the actual problem ....

Your best friend is a pasture layoff with rest for 2 months .... and then come back slowly ...

i would have them evaluate her, and then ultrasound or xray the area they think is causing issues.
