My 14 year old daughter is wanting to get into the sport of barrel racing. She owns a POA which would not be suitable for that and she knows that but my question is how do we get her started in barrel racing. What type of horse do we look for? Are there classes she can take? We live close to Dallas Tx. Any information would be very helpful.

I know we have BB's who are from around there that could help you find trainers to help your daughter.

My question is what is wrong with her POA to start off on? She's comfortable with him/her and confidence is probably the biggest thing you want to have when learning a new sport. I've seen many youth start off on anything but QH's.....

Best of luck to her !

My POA was multi purpose and showed in all events starting with halter and showmanship, thru english, western, driving, reining, barrels and poles and the rest of the games.  When we started we loped, by the time we were older, we were winning classes in all events.

Nothing wrong with doing everything and if your daughter is comfortable, go for it.  As far as a geting horse.  You'll just need to find something youth suitable. You've found the right website.

I think a POA is great! My youngest has a mutt pony and she's great! Probably will ride her as long as we can. I'd suggest trying what you have first. Maybe find a trainer for lesson's that can help along the way. Start with small playdays or small jackpots. Have fun and go for individual improvement. Enjoy!

I agree with other posters............what's wrong with her POA?? As long as she is comfortable riding her pony and the pony is fairly well-broke, it would be perfect! She needs to learn how to ride the pattern correctly at a slow pace first before adding speed.

You are not that far from Josey Ranch in Marshall. They train the leading WINNING kids in the US. I would check with them for a clinic so that she can learn to ride correctly. If she is really interested and wants to be competitive, she needs to learn to ride correctly. I think Joseys MAY have some horses to ride at the clinics if you do not have one. Call and check with them. After a clinic, you will have an idea what kind of horse to look for. You might want to look for an older horse that is kind of been there, done that so she can enjoy barrel racing.

Let me invite you to come to the REUNION May 2-4 or even better, Jr. World for the kids May 9-11. They will get your competitive juices flowing. Everyone is so friendly and we have such a good time. It makes me want to ride like I was 14. (At this point I would settle for riding like I did when I was 40)

Even closer to you are kendra dickson , michelle mcleod and fallon taylor. While they are currently on the rodeo road they have assistants who could steer you in the right direction. This is exactly how fallon got her start, google her name or search her on Facebook. She always is willing to help newcomers...

Also go to the events page on this website and go watch an event near you. Kendra hosts events in denton and even does free clinics...

good luck and have fun on your new adventure.

This!

I started riding at nine and really got into playdays, then I graduated to junior rodeos at 12 or so.  I did one season of junior rodeos and decided I wanted to focus on just running barrels.  Someone suggested the Joseys and I went to a clinic right after my first rodeo season ended.  My parents bought me a new mare and we used to time to really get to know each other since you're on horseback all day long.  I LOVED it (so much that I'm contemplating attending one this spring if I have a new horse by then!).  I learned so much and I would really suggest one for your daughter.
