Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Need suggestions from all the mommies on here. My son will be 3 in May, and the past few weeks has fought bed time. Not like kicking and screaming fighting, just lays in his bed awake. Last night, I put him to bed at 9 without a fight, heard him kicking his mattress for a while, then nothing. I was getting ready for bed just after 10:30, and he came out of his room and said he wanted to sleep in my bed. I've been fighting a cold, and didn't feel like fighting with him, so I let him sleep with me, and he went right to sleep and slept all night--unlike me with this stupid cold...he does not normally sleep with me at all.
Anywho...back to the not going to sleep...I have no idea if he's just napping too long in the day? I've asked his sitter to keep his naps to about an hour and a half--he used to always take 2-3 hour naps. Or no nap at all if he won't go down before 1-1:30. If he doesn't get a nap, he crashes at 6:30-7 and will sleep for 12+ hours! We have always tried to keep his routine the same. Dinner, play, bath, snuggle, bed. He's not usually grumpy, infact the opposite lately. I'm hoping that warmer weather will mean more outside play time, equals a tired boy that wants to go to sleep!
Another question...any tricks to get him interested in potty training? He showed some interest at a year and a half, and little to nothing since. Again, waiting on warmer weather, hoping that letting him pee outside might be a trigger. | |

On bedtime, they seem to go through phases where their brains are making so many connections at once that they have trouble shutting down. I still lay down with my 5 year old because she likes to cuddle to sleep. My 8 year old recently went through a phase of wanting to go to sleep in our bed because he was having trouble getting to sleep in his own but didn't want anyone laying with him either. We let him and then moved him back to his bed when we went to bed. I think it was a comfort thing. It lasted a couple of months and he quit. My advice is let them be little and give them what they need. | |

Location: MI | At bedtime, I'm generally tired too so honestly, I don't tolerate a whole lot of up/down/out of bed/etc. so take this with a grain of salt :).
It could be that he's outgrowing his naps. I don't think I'd worry about it, if he's being quiet and just laying there. I always figured that if my kids went to bed in their own bed, eventually they'll stay there through the night.
My 22 month old has been getting up every. single. night. lately and coming into our room. If he lays quietly or sleeps, he generally stays (because I'm lazy and my husband generally sleeps through it). If he tosses and turns, I bring him back to his room.
I agree with the warmer weather, I can't wait for the kids to be able to get outside more either.
As for the potty training, all of mine (so far) have potty trained between 1.5 and 2. I get sick of buying diapers so we work on it, give treats for going on the potty. With my son I had to start giving treats for just sitting on the potty (guess I'm not above bribing :). My son is almost there. I start just not dressing the bottom half for the day, and sitting on the potty at intervals and redirecting to the bathroom when accidents happen. Now my son is up to wearing undies. :) It's easiest if you are going to be home for a few days. I know there's a ton of ideas about potty training though... | |

My son thought peeing on trees was just the coolest thing ever! lol
My son would just lay in bed too, which was fine with me. He eventually got to where he was falling asleep faster but it still takes him a little bit to actually fall asleep. I won't let him sleep with me, he beats the crap out out me in his sleep lol. Sometimes he doesn't want to sleep in his room cause he is scared so I let him sleep on the couch, but that isn't very often and usually he tells me "I will NEVER ever ever watch Goosebumps before going to bed again. I promise!" He has never been a pain to put to bed. Actually he is 9 now and tells us when he is going to bed usually (before his bed time). A couple of weekends ago we had some friends over, he came up to me at about 8:30 and told me he was going to bed. I told him it was the weekend, he could stay up longer and play if he wanted to. He was excited and ran back to his room. Our friend's girlfriend said "See what he did there?" I asked what? She says "He totally just played yall into letting him stay up late." Ummm no honey he didn't, he was seriously going to bed lol.
Then he does things like wakes me up at 6:30 in the morning completely dressed with his backpack on telling us he is late for school when the alarms haven't even gone off yet lol. Although this morning he about got decked. He tripped over a dog toy in the dark, stepped on the Doberman who yelped and shook the bed trying to get up, bounced off the dresser knocking things over, and when I opened my eyes I saw someone about 4 feet away with a beanie on coming at me very fast! (It was actually him falling and trying to catch himself on the bed) I screamed, husband jumped up, kid screamed, dogs started barking lol. It was a mess, but everyone was awake!
So there is my off topic story for the day lol.

| I went through the same thing about 2 months ago with my daughter. She will be 2 next month. She wouldnt go to sleep, I exteneded her bed time to 7:30 instead of 7:00. It helped alot. I agree with the other post...... He may not need a huge nap time. I noticed my kid does better at bed time when she gets 45min-1hr nap. Its enough to shake off the crabbiness and recharge her batteries. | |
