The summer series in Phx started Feb 7th. Made the trip to see how Cash was feeling after the winter basically off. Been working hard getting her legged up. She did great for me. Any mistakes made were definitely on my end, so I was excited to haul her on the 15th for the 2nd race and make corrections.

The horses were running around in the pasture the night before. Watched hubbys gelding land a  kick to her chest.  I didn't think much of it, because the gelding is a pansy and has never kicked hard enough to hurt her. Went to feed the next day and it is so swollen and warm. She won't let me stretch her. Is short stepping. So I'm assuming my summer may be over before it began...

I've been cold hosing several times a day and turning her out so she will walk more. Swelling has gone down noticeably but it's still a decent size. She's walking more comfortably. Still seems very sore.

About how long typically does it take to heal from an injury like this?

Keep doing what you are doing and add some PenG or other general type antibiotics due to the pocket of blood setting up a bacterial infection ...

If she has an abscess which she probably will .... get vet to lance it to drain out the pus and fluids. If the lance is large enough ... use a small shot syringe to pump some liquid furazone into the hole and wash it out with the water hose pressed to the lanced hole ...

You could easily be looking at 6 months ... when kicked in the chest like that ... I always let them off longer incase they have a micro crack in their breast bone time to heal ...

GOOD LUCK ...

Looks like a simple hematoma to me.  I can't imagine why it would take the entire summer to heal. Once it's soft, stick a needle in it and drain it.

I personally wouldn't drain it, it will resorb with time. if the damaged vessels haven't sealed and you drain it, it can cause the vessels to continue to bleed. The pressure in the skin is helping stop the bleeding. I would also fear causing an infection if I were to open it. I would keep irrigating and icing if possible and if the swelling doesn't continue to go down, take her to the vet and see if he wants to drain it or leave it to heal on its own. I wouldn't think any longer than a couple months to heal.

Dont look bad at all, just keep up with what your doing and dont pen her up in a small area let her move around and work out the stiffness and swelling, you wont beable to tell that this happen after a few weeks. I would rub her down in that area with sore no more liniment or Bigeloil by Absorbine

Thank you for the suggestions. The BIL mentioned lancing and draining, and I'm not sure I want to resort to that quite yet. I am very worried about opening it up to further infection. If I don't see drastic improvement and swelling going way down, I will haul her up to the vet and see what he thinks.

I believe the only PenG the local store has is injectable. Is that the type you are speaking of? I hadn't thought of that, but I'll probably pick some up as precaution.

The kick was more the right of the chest. So I'm hopeful that the breastbone was uninjured. Really appreciate the responses.

If she is moving around okay, I would think she should heal fairly quick. Sorry this happened! :(

I have been rubbing liniment, can't recall the name right now. But it's blue and minty. It does say for swelling and soreness due to injury. They are on about 1.5 acres, and during the day I turn them out in the larger pasture. It's only about 2 acres, but it's grassy, so they're constantly moving around.

She moves around fine. I can tell she is sore and she doesn't stride out as far, but she is still willing to lope around if the gelding gets going. I know it doesn't feel great though, she's so dang gritty. Never flinches at a thing, and just has a "want to" attitude. So being that she's hesitant, I can tell she's hurting.

I wouldn't drain it either. It's more likely to get infected if you do. I would just let it reabsorb. Maybe give some THE Inflammation Relief and put some THE ThiamOxide on it to help with the pain and inflammation.

Thats good that she can keep moving around. I think you are doing a good job at taking care of her. With all that hair I would shave that area so that you can really get a good rub on her when you rub her down with a liniment, just dont get it to short or the liniment might burn just a bit, just depends on what kind you use.  Oh and was going to tell you in my other post, she's got some pretty feet

I would stay away from the PenG, can cause more problems than it helps.

I would clip the hair and use Surpass then 12 hours later I would use DMSO with a little Dex in it. Keep alternating every 12 hours and ice it if you can, even 20 minutes will help.

If she is still very sore on it you can get an ultrasound to see if there are any muscle tears, that will take longer to heal.  I bet she will be fine in a couple weeks if you get agressive about getting the swelling down.

I will shave her back a bit today before I rub her down. Luckily our weather has been super mild, if not warm. So I don't feel so bad about cold hosing her.

And thank you! I actually trim her myself. I was having her shod, but she is a bit club footed on her front right, so I opted for bare feet so I can keep her heel where it needs to be. I appreciate the comment, as sometimes I worry I'm not doing her justice. But we don't have any reputable barefoot trimmers here.

Had a gelding get a big hematoma out playing. After a month of it not going down I called the vet out to lance it open. He said if I had called sooner he probably wouldn't have done anything anyways as the ideal thing is for them to absorb it. BUT my gelding did not and it did need to be opened and was filled with clotted blood and crap. He still didn't put him on anything. Just had me stick the hose right up into the hold he had made and hose it out super good and keep it open as many times a day as I could for as long as it stayed open. Was super gross but looks good now. I would just stay the course for a bit more before calling the vet. He said always give them a few good weeks before calling when its just a simple hematoma.

Just a simple hematoma.  Let it resorb on its own, DO NOT lance it, you will introduce bacteria and possibly have an infection your hands.  You can also rub it with DMSO and that will help the body to resorb it.  As it resorbs, you might also notice it moving around (from the front of the chest to the bottom, or between the legs) that is normal too.
