a horse I looked at had an extremely low hanging bottom lip when relaxed and her tail seems like its been injected or something. she is young and off the track so her tail would nt of been done for western pleasure or reining.... anyone know what these signs mean??? thanks.

Sounds like maybe the horse was sedated?
Or perhaps she was very relaxed

Lots of horses let their lips hang loose when relaxed.

As for tail being injected, I have no idea what you mean???

she was very relaxed . she had just gotten a chiro adjustment / I know about bottom lip relaxing. this is more than that. hung very low, she pulls it up when you ride her, but still hangs a bit...................and her tail does not swish. tail feels like rubber not hard. the lady adjusting noticed it, and we never saw her swish her tail. I meant injected like how some western pleasue people deaden the tail head ..

Then I would get a vet check done.....did you buy this mare off the track?

I've got a horse that his bottom lip hangs and hangs very low!! It flops around when he walks. Even when your riding him he doesn't suck it up until you break past a trot. It's the craziest thing but nothings wrong with him as far as effecting his performance and such. Just got a lazy lip. Get you a needle and prick her tail in different places and see if you get a response. If you scratch the underneath, kind of on the side, does she move it for you. (most will lift it to the side a little)

Definitely have a vet check done with blood work if you are worried about it. Always better safe than sorry!! But I have a gelding and his lip hangs so low I hide cookies in his mouth sometimes LOL

Its just while he's standing around and starts getting sleepy and that lower lip hangs down far, I sneak a cookie or two in there and when her perks up the look on his face is PRICELESS when he starts chewing that cookies that just magically appeared in his mouth ;) haha!

If you are thinking about buying this horse I would have a vet check done on it, sounds like nerve damage and maybe a broken tail head.

thank you for your replies... no I am not buying her, actually a friend of mine did and we just noticed the tail deal.... guess the lip was just a coincidence.... I will have her stick a pin in her tail and see if there is a reaction. I doubt there will be.... ive never felt a tail like this... I was thinking maybe she broke it as a baby, or a bad tail wrap??? thanks girls...

Could have been caught in the gate at the track.   You could find out who the trainer was and give em a call - they might tell you ?

I sold a mare that hhad a large lip and when relaxed would hang her bottom lip she also didn't raise or swish her tail unless there were flies biting her.....weird I know but he wouldn't raise her tail even to fart ha. I would get it checked though if your worried and don't trust the person she was purchased from.

Hmm, I dont know. All I could think of for the tail was WP or reining and you ruled that out. As for the lip, I've seen some do this.

My gelding's lip hags and it is nerve damage from an injury before I bought him.  He still has the scar.  During his vet check, the vet had told me it might heal, but nerves take forever.  It has gotten better but it still droops a little bit.

Could the lip thing be from having a tongue tied incorrectly much while racing?

Speaking of this subject. Don't forget to get the horse scoped to check for a flapper problem.

knew a horse that had a tail bag left in for the winter and the lady tied it tight to the dock of the tail. totally cut the circulation off on it and now he has no use of it at all except the top few bones. stick a pin on her tail or in a place that would annoy her some how to see if you get a swish or a reaction.

I used to know some people inject the tails with something to make their tails not swish(I assume to hide a lameness) I hope it's just a fluke for you. Best wishes!
