Is there a rule of thumb for pricing used items?  Like tack, etc?  I've always thought if something is used, you discount 30-50%.  30% if it's barely used, and up from there.  I just don't understand why sellers price things at 90% of retail value.  Why wouldn't buyers just buy new?

I have seen crown c's priced more then I would have to pay brand new.

I guess it all depends on how bad you want to sell it, and how bad you want to buy it

Alison, pointed that out to me the other day. I'm not sure the logic behind it lol......I've rode this Crown C for 1 year and now it's worth $500 more than if you bought it new......wut?

Sorry, don't mean to derail and I promise I'll stop after this lol....

And.....why are goats soooooo expensive on Craigslist? You can buy one for $20 at the sale, but for some reason, they are $250 on Craigslist......I'm considering a career change to professional goat saleswoman.

Donkeys too, I bought one at the auction for 15.00 could have gotten 3 for 12.00 and I see them advertised for 250-400.

I saw a pair of cowboy boots on Facebook this morning for $200....ad said, "they hurt my feet." Now, why, would I want to pay $200 for some used boots that hurt your feet lol?

I see lots of really used saddles in our area that are like 30 years old and they want almost what a new saddle will cost you.

Great post!! I was just thinking this earlier as I was looking at saddles. How in the world can a 10-12 year old saddle be worth about $200-$300 less than a brand new one?? I think I will save for a little longer and buy a new one!! I also saw a package of used VenTech boots, 4 pack, for $15 higher than you can buy a brand new set shipped. ???

It depends on the item and how used. If the items are used but in just about new condition, 90% of retal is fair (I think). I mean the deal is...if you don't think it's fair, then pay more for the new one.

as far as random tack - i agree that there is no advantage in paying 5-10% less than new for something used unless the buyer is one of those people that just likes to say they bought it used.
there are some instances where some saddles are in such high demand (makers have waits of years) where a used one can bring a pretty penny. a true used one may not bring as much as a new one, but almost certainly bring more than what the seller paid. some buyers buying a new saddle from these makers will never even use the saddle only to turn around and make a profit of $500-1000 easy. but these are not your run of the mill saddles either though.
