You can't talk/go hoarse and usually requires meds.  Usually lasts about a week.

I had an 8 month old colt develop it during late winter-early spring two years ago.
It is polyps that develop in the airways usually due to irritation/infection from allergies.. He told me Young horses eventually get over it as they get older. My vet scoped him, and gave him antibiotics (exceed) After a few corses of smz s didn't work. He needed a Strong antibiotic.
After the exceed he hasn't developed it since. He just turned 3.

Dealing with it right now on a 4 year old. Antibiotics including Excede and Uniprim didn't work.  Plus I was giving EqStim.
I just had her scoped. My vet calls it "blisters". I have to IV her for 3 days with DMSO, then some oral stuff he gave me that's got DMSO/albuterol/dex in it 2X a day, and lysine in her feed. He said even with all of this it could take months for her to get over it. It just has to run it's course.

I'm doing a two week treatment right now, 1st week of Dex and Ventipulmn daily, then every other the following week to take down the irritation . We decided to do an allergy test also, which I'm waiting on the results from.

She developed allergies end of last fall and after 3 different vets looked at her I just didn’t feel like I ever got an answer so I had her scoped.

I'm hoping I'll be able to eliminate whatever is in her world that she is allergic too. UGH.

Anyone had any luck with any of the respiratory supplements out there?

I was told by my vet that it alot of times comes from the equine herpes virus.  Which none of my horses have been sick, but any horse that has been hauled around (competitions, track, sales, ect) could possibly be carriers even if they have been vaccinated and don't show signs of being sick.
My filly has just had a nagging cough for about a month and after both rounds of antibiotics & EQStim and it was hanging on there, I just had her scoped this morning, in fact.
ETA--I've tried about every respiratory supplement out there, in the past, to no avail. The Finishline product called Air Power is the best thing I've found.   My FG stud got sick when he was a 3 year old and his lungs were all scarred up from that.  He always had problems, and he had horrible reactions to ventipulmin.  So I tried several supplements and nothing worked, but the Air Power did seem to help him when I was running him.
His grain had to be oiled down, his hay had to be wet down, and keeping him stalled at shows (due to the dust in shavings and barn air) was always hard on him.  I am hoping my filly won't end up the same way as he did.

Well poop. I have been using Air Power also so I will keep up with that.

My mare is a grade 3, was yours given a 'grade'? What did her airway look like? This one was irratated and had little bits of mucus. Her was also just a random cough here and there, not sick at all. I had her blood pulled and no infection anywhere.  Did you get the allergy test done??

Hopefully I get an answer with the allergy test.

My vet didn't give mine a grade, just said she was one of the worst ones he's seen.  Lucky me, I should have gotten a prize, LOL.
He let me look in the scope and her airway was very red/inflamed with white blisters all over in there.  And there was some mucus.
She was never sick, just had the random, nagging cough that wouldn't go away.
I've been riding her almost daily since October with no problems.  She had a week off when I was gone in January and when I got home from my trip she was coughing.  At first I thought it might have been the bale of hay she was eating.  But none of the other horses she was with were coughing.  When the abx didn't work I figured we were looking at a virus.
No allergy test was done.  She's never had any problems before now.  I guess she knew I'd sent my BFA payments in on her and I am expecting her to run in December.  LOL.
