| I have 2 really 4H prospects my daughters are bringing threw 4H. They plan to make them thier future barrels prospects. One is a yearling and the other is a 2 yr old. Nothing outstanding on the pedigrees. Both where affordable as we don't have millions to spend on the best of the best. I personialy loved the stallion used to produce them!! They are 1/2 siblings. One is a gelding and the other a little filly. They both have great minds!!! What do you all think....here are the pedigrees.

Location: Oklahoma | You have to go with what you can afford... but I think the resounding answer you are going to get on the board is "yes, the pedigree matters".
As much as I wish it didn't, you can't open an issue of Barrel Horse News and try to ignore all the major bloodlines that are out there winning.
If you are just wanting to stick with 4H races I think you'll be fine... if you venture out into jackpots and open type races you will probably need to have an extra special horse to make up for the bloodlines the horse is lacking.
You can't ride papers, but if you try to re-sell the horses as barrel horses the papers will make a difference to some people. |

Location: Beggs, OK | On proven horses it doesn't, but there's only one way to get there! My favorites in my pasture right now show the least on paper....I don't mind because I'm not in the business of trying to get people to buy my horses. I pick prospects that I like and go from there.
But, I will also add....pedigree or no, they need to be very conformationally sound. |

FYI I wasn't trying to ignore anything...lol....and your very right....can't ride papers.

If I were looking to buy a trained barrel horse, and that horse was winning rodeos and doing what I wanted to achieve, I would care less what the bloodlines are, because the horse has PROVEN themselves.
In general, it depends what your goals are with your horses. Chances are, you won't go to the NFR with no-names on the papers (doesn't mean it can't, or hasn't happened, but the odds are against you). But if you simply want your girls to have fun in 4H and learn some things along the way, well more power to ya then.
I myself very much like the pedigree of Joey. My mom has a Two Eyed Jack mare that we love , and my old horse was Beau Bonanza bred. Best of both worlds.

Sorry, sorry! I think I meant that line more for myself! I'm looking at horse that has been started on the pattern, but doesn't have a single barrel horse on his papers. Trying to justify him vs. something with the same amount of training & price WITH some proven bloodlines! |

I agree with this. Out of my last three prospects, two were bred really well and the other nothing special. Hes shown more promise than the other two combined. |

Location: Texas | I think pedigree matters through and through. I have a gelding who people automatically write off because his pedigree doesn't match his job. Doesn't matter that he's a proven 1d/2d kid safe horse...
I sold one of my mares in less than a day because of her pedigree. She has a half sibling who has won over 100,000 in futurity earnings, and her dam is a stakes winner and. 100% rom producer. Her sire is a very successful race horse now in Brazil. I didn't have the time to work her through coming back from an injury and got exactly what I wanted for her price wise. I had another mare from a similar situation and got pennies for her because she had nothing to fall back on pedigree wise.

| I CANNOT stress conformation enough. That is what makes a horse, not it's papers.
Dr Kirk and Two Eyed Jack are nice horses, even if they are a little while back there. Honestly, the gelding will always sell faster than the mare, because she has no breeding worth. Good papers make a mare able to have a second career should something happen. IF a gelding gets hurt, you have a hay burner.
My mare is starting to be a mid 16 second barrel horse and she is fairly lineless (like worse than yours, at least they have Two Eyed Jack somewhat close up) in anything performance, only a few halter horses and maybe a pleasure horse way back. And she is a very athletic, nice looking mare who will be bred just because she has a great mind, work ethic and conformation that should improve her breed. |

Location: Dubach, LA | My take on the big names is that they all had just as many dinks as they did winners. They were over-bred. ALSO, you have to factor in the futurity riders that do well with a certain bloodline have a great deal of influence. We have a local stud, Reds Western Native, that is owned by a very smart lady who breeds him to nice mares, and who gets his foals into good hands that will show them to their greatest potential. Even with all their success in the Southeast, they haven't managed to make it on the national scene yet.

| The filly actually has some nice running horses on the bottom side of her pedigree. She may surprise you. One thing that I suggest is that you send your daughter to a GOOD clinic to help her learn how to train a barrel horse properly Well worth the money if she wants to compete successfully. |

I mean sure it would be nice if the horse had good running bloodlines but like the saying goes "you can't ride papers" a good bloodline is not everything you can have a nice bred horse that has a ****ty attitude. You can have a grade horse that gives 100%. Grade horses
Can be 1d barrel horses and so can papered horses. In the barrel racing world it seems like the horse can be papered but if there's no running horses in the breeding the horse might as well be grade. JMO! If u like the horse then it doesn't matter. |

You are doing a wonderful job of parenting and setting up your kids with memories of doing 4H with horses they love and are training themselves.
Bless you for giving them the opportunity to learn and become horsemen and do not be concerned with the pedigrees you have right now ........
THEY FIT THE JOB AT HAND PERFECTLY!! ...
As you kids march thru the world of Mother Nature and the minds of their horses and improve their skills .... they will let you know when they want to move up a notch to compete at a higher level !!!
This is how my daughter started out loving horses and working on her horsemanship skills ......
The first thing she learned was to ..
SMOOCH THAT THING TO MAKE IT GO FASTER!! ....
