Best of the Badlands Location: You never know where I will show up......	unfortunately in my experience, there isn't a lot of treatment for it. It's usually caused by an old injury. My FG son has a calcified suspensory in his left front leg. It was in the lower part of the suspensory. When we first discovered it, it was pretty small and there was no 'fix' to it. So we had it injected so he wasn't sore on it, but eventually it kept getting bigger & bigger. Within a year's time he was so lame that injecting it did not help anymore. The calcification will just keep growing and getting bigger. His actually so got out of control that it started affecting his fetlock joint also. He became non weight bearing on it. I was going to have him euthanized after breeding season last year. We kept him in a covered 30 x 30' pen all year, nursed him through the summer. By fall his entire joint had calcified. He now has a huge front leg but he can bear weight on it. He is breeding sound and seems to be getting around fairly well. But would never be ride-able even for a small child. I would pass on a horse with this problem. It can go to hell in a handbasket very quickly.

I really can't find anything solid on the internet about it other than initial treatment so I thought I would ask for first hand experience. I am told the calcification started 4 years ago and I was told that she has him inject with sarapin(?) every 3 to 4 months and that helps with the pain. She did send a video of him and he looked sound enough for my daughter to putt around on. Not noticeably lame at a walk and little off at a trot. I am glad I asked before I jumped in head first! Well boo, guess I will move on to the next horse.

We did both sarapin and cortisone shots, they will help short term but eventually you will have to have it done more and more frequently to keep the horse comfortable. It really sucks, and there's no way I'd go through it again. It might not be as bad if it's in a different location in the suspensory but where mine happened to be in the lower branch of it, it was taking a lot of stress and like I said, with all of the inflammation it caused, it started a bunch of arthritis seperately in the fetlock joint. If it were up higher it might not go bad as fast as mine did but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. If my horse hadn't been needed for breeding last spring I would have had him put to sleep sooner. But he's getting around better now that everything has all fused.
