We have a local riding club that puts on a couple of NBHA barrel races and fun shows each year. It's a club that requires membership and members have free access to the arena, club house, etc. for personal use. They can ride in the arena any time and can use our club house for birthdays, parties, etc. free of charge. Our county taxes are eating us alive. I'm wondering how other local riding clubs like us are set up. I was told years ago when it was first started they were told it could not be a non-profit and had to be set up as a corporation. We barely make enough money each year to cover our expenses and I'm just trying to figure out if there is anything we can do to save the club money.

Any information would be appreciated since I'm clueless!

TIA

Do your members pay dues? If not, they should. The barrel races and fun shows should be making enough money to cover expenses. If not, they may need to raise entry fees. Our club pulls in about $2,000 a year on shows, dues, etc. We also make quite a bit on our Cook Shack during the shows. Our property and buildings are free and clear, so our only expenses are upkeep and utilities. Our tractor is a big money-pit. Our horse shows pull in around 100 horses. We charge $10 for members to ride unlimited classes, $20 for non-members. Of course, the jackpots are different. I hope this helps!
ETA: We are a non-profit, but it was done way before I came along and I don't know how it was done. We pay a fee once a year to keep that up.

Our members do pay dues. But with taxes, upkeep, & utilities we are just making enough to cover them.

I am going to talk to someone about the non-profit issue and see if we can be changed.

Thanks!

Definately ask on the Non-profit issue. Our club is not 501c3 non profit like charitable organizations are but we are a not for profit organization still just a different class. I am not sure of all of the legalities of it but there are different types so I would look into that.

We are non profit. Our club was started in the 60s they had to file the original by la and I believe become incorporated.
