Location: Gainesville, TX | Okay, my gelding has done this for a while and I do really want to do something about it. He will snort and/or sometimes cough once or twice at the beginning of exercise. He doesn't do it everytime, but sometimes. He doesn't do this after he runs or at the end of exercise. I've known about coughing after a run for a while but since he didn't do this I always thought of him just 'clearing his pipes' at the beginning of our ride.
A couple weeks ago he had a little bit of discharge from both nostrils. It was clear. It went away in a couple days.
He is in a medium size turn out pen with a shed and free choice round bale coastal. I blanket him as needed. He's in good shape and at a good weight. He eats without a problem.
I'm inclined to think he may have allergies and am thinking about trying a supplement. I want to check with my vet too obviously but am a bit short on funds what with breeding two mares and having to spend $1000 recently on my new broodmare's eye infection. He's been doing it for a while. I don't plan on doing anything much until I have info from his vet but was curious if you all identified these symptoms more with allergies or bleeding. |

 Vodka for Lunch
Location: Lala Land | Sounds a lot like my horse that is COPD. My vet told me absolutely no round bales for him, to feed him on the ground (we use a tractor tire with a rubber mat under) so the mucus will drain. If he coughs he is prescribed Ventipulmin for 5 days. We have only had to do 2 rounds of Ventipulmin since having his lungs flushed last spring.
Does your horse push air out a lot? Make the Pppssshhh sound? That's a good indicator that he could have this according to my vet.
Also, was basically told not a lot I can do other than keep dust to a minimum and give Ventipulmin if he has an "episode". I have given Lung Aid with good luck since last June no coughs and doesn't take a long time to recover after a run.
Good luck... I hope it's just mild allergies for you.

Yeah, he does seem to do that some. Sometimes it sounds like he's sighing; sometimes he snorts. |

I edited my post above w/ more detail.
Every time I go from loping to a walk my horse pushes air out. If he can get a good deep breath w/out couging that is a good sign though. I would just try to keep the dust down as much as possible for him. My vet told me that she hasn't had a lot of luck with antihistamines, but if you find something you feel helps then feed it but that you can sure spend a lot of $$ trying things. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | He does seem to catch his breath and breath normally after about 10 strides and doesn't do it again. |
