Have you ever breezed her? you could also try just using one barrel, sprint to it and sprint back out. then set your barrels further than normal (as much as possible if in an arena, if in a field you have free choice) and just keep encouraging her to stretch out.

I know breezing is a good way to encourage a horse to learn to run or free up, but one thing I'll say is OUR confidence and ability to ride without getting in their way makes a difference, but also helping them if needed. Their confidence is important too and a solid foundations of basic training and understanding cues is key to( I think). While at times our intentions are good of hussling a horse, we also need to see what we are or arent doing to encourage them, or if something needs to be fixed. Young horses this is really a critical aspect to consider...........also to never rule out if pain is a factor........

I think a piece of it too is slow work, focusing on lengthening the stride and encouraging a bigger step. One of my favorites is lengthen down the long side, shorten on the ends. I think this especially comes in useful on smaller patterns where you can't really crank them up too high. I also think if you look at some of the fast times that look like they're done in a high lope, the horse has a large step between the barrels. Breezing is great for teach them to really open up and go, but I think stride length should be a part of everyday workouts too.

Not crazy at all.  Race horses are "taught" how to run, why not a barrel horse.  Breezing will definetly help teach a horse to run.

Yeah the only problem for some is finding a safe place to breeze one.

I've got miles of fields to ride in so breezing isn't a problem.  My daughter and I pair our horses up that are similar in speed so they race each other.  Its always good to breeze them in an arena too so they learn to run even when there are walls and fences.
