ACEINTHEHOLE - 2014-03-26 8:54 AM It's the outside leg around each barrel.. the inside leg kinda floats around and guides for direction, but the outside leg is where the pressure is and actaully causing the direction change and keeping the forward momentum going.

Agreed

Years ago someone I was talking to some one about how they felt the inside hock and the outside stifle on the hind legs took the brunt...made sense to me at the time. My mare had fractured her right hock and even though she was sound had some stiffness issues in a turn to the left. This was 20+ years ago. She suggested that I switch my mare to left barrel first so we only had to deal with it for one turn. Seemed to help my mare quite a bit.

phillyincal - 2014-03-26 9:41 AM My mare developed arthritis in her outside front (knee). Look at pictures, the outside front leg is the one that braces in the turn.
There are many factors that can contribute to arthritis in any joint, trauma, any swelling, malnourishment (I just learned this) conformation, etc

Oh yes for sure.  When my mare started to get sore in her knee, the first thing my vet recommended was for me to switch directions on her.  I ran her hard for over 15 years, and not just barrels, but gymkhana as well (not fooling around playdays,  she was very competive).  She is an amazing horse and never had any lameness problems, trauma or malnutrition (although that is interesting to hear it can cause arthritis).   If I had the money to clone her I would!

I remember the thread you were talking about.  I thought it was decided it was the outside knee and the inside hock and stifle that took the most force in a turn.
