| So I have a pretty darn super broke laid back can't get him excited about anything 4 year old. Every time it is cool outside he bucks ONLY in the barrel pattern. I warm him up loping trotting at least 30 mins when it is cold. But as soon as I ask for him to run he breaks in half, then just stands there doesn't run off. I get back on him tune his butt with the whip the go right back to the barrels asking him at a run again and he works like a champ. |

Location: Small Town Iowa | If he has no lamelness or health issues causing this. It sounds like what my mare was like last year. She got a snotty attitude when I asked her to work. Hence leaving me with a broken collar bone, after that ride I sent her to a trainer to do the basics and pretty much ride the dog pi** out of her. After 30 days at a basic she came back a changed woman. But my mare wasn't consistently rode for 2 years so I figured I'd have my hands full, just I never imagined I'd be left broken. Just be careful and don't get hurt. |

Location: Kansas | O goodness, I trained a gelding who would do this for a gal.......flat out butthead he was! He only did it when you asked for a lope, and not even on the barrel pattern. I could be riding in the pasture, ask for a lope....and I'd be kissing dirt.
Are you riding with spurs or anything that he might associate with pain? Maybe you need to lope a couple of circles around the pattern, then ask for a lope through the pattern if he doesn't buck. |

| Have you asked him to run anywhere else besides the pattern? If not, I would try doing a hand gallop (sorry, english coming out in me) or breezing him elsewhere to see if he does it then.
Also, does your saddle really fit? Could it be when he stretches out that it somehow pinches him differently? |

| Yes he checked out at the vet and Chiro... Also has his teeth done by a good dentist every 6 months. humm I have a CJ record breaker and no it doesn't really fit him because he is sooo small I have to use saddle shims. It's just so weird because he is so laid back almost to the point that he's never going to make a 1D horse which is fine he is actually going to make a wonderful kids horse if he would stop bucking. And like I said only when it's cold out and won't do it when I'm warming him up I would actually be ok with that because you know its coming. As soon as you stand in the saddle and ask for him to run turns into a bronc..Not during hot days tho..I'm thinking of throwing in the blanket on this one which sucks also bc he is bred bred bred

No you he just needs more wet saddle blankets.....maybe find him another job for now, then put him on the pattern once he's seen ALOT. |

| You may be right he's lazy and getting mad when asked to work hard. So how do I go about fixing that? He has had his many shares of getting his butt worked into the ground I have just started asking for speed. |

Location: Small Town Iowa | What seemed to help my lazy mare this year was getting her on the end of a lunge line and making her work on it, loping cirlces, roll backs side passing whatever she gave me fits about while I rode her. I do this before I ride and she has a better outlook on life. I'd rather have a coming to Jesus meeting while I'm still on the ground than be on her back when she decides to be a brat. |

| I've had a couple do this over the years... First rule out ulcers, you would be surprised what a round of omeprezol can do for behavioral issues. We have seen horses that were turned out come in and have ulcer issues this year, its weird but maybe something to do with all the weird weather we have all been getting??? Then if you are a confident enough rider and have ruled out any serious vet issues, take an over and under, give him his head and spank him in the belly to make him run through it. A horse can't buck very much if they maintain enough forward motion, they need to stall out their front end to drop their head and get to it. For whatever reason some horses just need to be reminded they have to work through a little bit of irritation. If you don't feel confident enough to do that then the other option is to sit him on his butt and roll him back, drive him forward a few feet sit him down again and roll back again... do this several times and really get him working as soon as he starts to offer to buck. |

Location: Back in California | I have a really nice gelding. . .sweetheart. He started bucking - which was not his personality at all. Ended up being EPM.
EPM can cause behavior changes. Just a thought. Glad I got him checked out before punishing him. He has been treated (thankfully we caught it in early stages) and he is back to his sweet personality. |

Location: Central Texas | Sounds kind of like my mare, she is broke, bomb proof, nothing bothers her. She has always had some issues taking and holding the left lead, never really got good at it. If she had time off from riding/working the pattern, she would start crow hopping/bucking coming out of the turns and sometimes going into the turn, mainly on the first. Had, hocks, stifles checked, all clean. She became very sore in front feet. Checked for PSSM, came up negative on type 1 & 2. Had blood work done, all good. Ended up being SI issues. google it for symptons and check them out. Just a suggestion. I sure hope it is nothing serious and you get it resolve. |
