Elite Veteran Posts: 805 Location: Arkansas	I have a 16 year old gelding who has previously had horner's syndrome which is much like Bell's palsy in humans. He has had a torn suspensory. I have had a blood panel ran on him and all counts are normal. I feed him his own mix of oats, beet pulp, and alfalfa pellets. He is turned out on grass 24/7 with access to round bale of hay.. I have been having children the last few years and he was ridden sporadically. My husband and I have been working hard to get him back in top shape for me to run again. This is the oldest I have ever owned a horse and want to do my best by him as far as his needs. Those of you experienced in older barrel horse care I would greatly appreciate how you care for yours that you continue to haul. He still tries to give me his all and I want to do the same for him.

More bootie than waist! Posts: 18425 Location: Riding Crackhead.	I'm in a similar situation with my 17 yr old gelding. He's had issues of tying up, had a bad fall at a rodeo 3 years ago and now he's stiff and doesn't move out the best. I have plenty of younger stuff to ride but I needed 3 horses for the Bonus Finals so in Feb I started getting him legged up again. I switched his feed around again trying to help the tying up and I do think I have that fixed as he doesn't feel as tight now. I also have learned that if I know I'm not going to have time to ride him for a couple days I put his PHT blanket on and leave it until the next ride. That really seems to help. I've got him on Platinum Performance and he looks real good. I still haven't turned a barrel with him as I wanted to make sure he was ready before I did. For some horses its tougher than others to bring them back and mine is one of them. Good luck to you.
