Extreme Veteran Posts: 364 Location: Texas	My vet said to feed hay and cornn oil. Corn oil helps to put weight on without making them hot. If your horse needs weight increase the amount of hay they are getting. Coastal or alfalfa will work.

There are MUCH better alternatives with a good balance of both. Corn oil can cause more harm than good. Sure, you'll see a fat horse, but it can cause inflammation. Better safe than sorry.

Rice Bran Oil, Flaxseed, Stabilized Rice Bran, Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, are all good sources of fat without the starch. Oats and Barley are ALL starch. Not a lot of fat. So I don't suggest that route. Stay away from corn oil or corn itself too. Nutrena makes a fat supplement that is rice bran based. I think it's Empower Boost or something along those lines. It's 30-40% fat I think. Buckeye's Ultimate Finish products are also nice to use. Never heard of feeding horses sunflower seeds... Interesting. BOSS. Not just ordinary sunflowers seeds. Some kind can be toxic. Make sure they are Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.

The mare I feed it too is an absolute hothead, and is terrible to keep weight on, and since I've switched her over to Hemp she's kept weight on super well. Where do you get hemp? Never heard of feeding that? Do you buy it in bulk?
