.....turned in to an evil witch that I can't even catch in a large stall without her trying to kick the crap out of me.  I have never had a mare turn like this after foaling, I can't even get close enough to the baby to iodine his navel or see if its a colt or filly.

Not sure on her history, this is her first foal for us.  She was given to us by a client because his health was failing and he was getting out of horses.  She has had several babies, we trained a couple of them, both very smart, good natured horses.

I know this probably happens quite a bit, just never has happened with one of our mares so I am not sure how to deal with it.  Just super suprised because she has never so much as pinned her ears in the direction of a human in the year we have owned her. Any advice?  Will she get better in a few days or will she be evil until we wean the baby?

There was a mare like this at a stable when I use to board. Absolutely the kindest little mare until she had the baby. The owner's mother went in the stall to attempt to doctor the mare for something. I can't remember now, but the mare kicked the mom in the chest, so a couple of us had to go in and drag her out. I was in a walking cast at the time and was scared crapless. The mom ended up with several broken ribs, but thankfully wasn't seriously injured. If memory serves me, the mare got over her witchiness after a couple of weeks.  Good luck to you. Be careful.

I don't have any experience, but have heard that once the new where's off (day or so) she'll get better.

We had several goats (yea I know not a horse!), but they would turn evil after kidding. They'd bite and headbutt and go on a crazy rampage for the first day, then go back to being their sweet selves the next day. Hopefully its just hormones and your mare will settle down!

I had a mare sort of like that. I could handle her or do anything with the foal, but she would go after all other people. She got over it after 2 weeks. Happened every year.

I had a maiden do that a few years ago. She was a sweet kind mare, but day 2 she turned evil and overprotective. It last about 3 days for her and she went back to normal.

Thanks for the replies, gives me hope this will be short lived.  My kids pet her and brush on her all the time, gonna have to put a stop to that, lol.
