Hi y'all,
I recently bought a new barrel horse who has really high withers. His withers are so high that I have to move my saddle up 5-6 times every time I ride him! It some times affects his run, especially in poles. The saddle I use is a deluxe barrel saddle by Cowboy Classic Saddlery that I won, its a nice saddle and I like it a lot but its just not cutting it on him. So to get to the point, does anyone know of a type of saddle that might work better on him or if maybe I just need a wider gullet, I've tried just about every saddle pad out there and I like the one I have now its a nice pad and it forms well to his back when I put a saddle on him. If anyone has suggestions please let me know, thanks!

why are you moving it up? Every horse has a "sweet" spot that the saddle will sit. If the saddle is moving back then fit it for that spot, don't move it back up. what pad are you using? is the saddle level after it moves back? pictures? there's a lot of people on here that are helpful in that area.

There is a pad for bridging, where it's filled in behind the shoulders, so it keeps it from sliding back.

I am looking into purchasing a bridge pad for my horse with high withers and a deep pocket behind the withers.

I'm debating between the Circle Y Bridge pad or the impact gel one... decisons decisons...

The are both available on horse.com and free shipping today only...

My horse has a high wither as well and my Martin fits him pretty good. You may have to try a few different saddles before you find the right one. Even though a martin fits my horse, it may not fit your horse at all.

I'm going to second the Meleta Brown saddle. I fit my horse beautifully (who doesn't have high withers) but there was SO much clearance for the withers that it would probably work well for a high-withered horse.

Only reason I didn't get a Meleta Brown (even though it fit my boy beautifully) is that it didn't fit me, as the rider. Great saddle though.

I'm moving it up because it slips back so far that the breast collar gets tight and its as far back as the breast collar will let it go and it make shim sore.

With my Debra Sibley On a high wither horse I use a sure fit orthopedic pad by sharon camarillo or a 1 1/2 inch wool pad depends on which one I grab first . on a more mutton withered horse I use a magnum felt from toklat that I have had for years.
