I have my extremely well breed cowbred gelding for sale and there is someone wanting to trade their mare for him but the mare is 8 and never been registered. Seller says all paper work is in order just needs sent in however last i checked after 48 months i goes up to $500 to reg and they must be parentage verified. I am not sure what is needed for that but i beleive one or both parents may be dead but they do appear to have other foals that hopefully have papers. I dont want to get stuck with a grade mare has anyone had to register an older horse?

Tell them to get busy, submit the paper work, pay the fees and when they get back the registration papers you will be ready to deal.
It's way to easy to claim a horse could be registered, much harder to have all  the paper work in hand and the stad and mare reports previusly filed to actually accomplish it

Both parents have to have DNA on file with aqha. You can call aqha and they will tell you if their DNA is on file

If the paperwork is not in order I move on to the next horse. Even transfers. I would say run.

you need to check with aqha for fees...on older horses it can cost least amount is $500 I think and might go up with age.  I would do lots of research thru Aqha on this horse before even considering purchasing....

This does not sound like a good trade to me.

Irritates me that people won't register a horse, but still want to benefit by telling you the horse is out of registered stock or could still be registered. They should have gone to the expense of registering if they want to benefit by the horse having papers and parentage/age can be verified.

Pass. There are way too many variables that could go wrong. DNA not on file. Needing breeder's certs or signatures from people who have passed away, etc. Plus the cost which only increases as they age. A while ago AQHA was doing a special where you could register older horses for $500, and that was a deal so it has most likely gone up by now.
