Hung Up on First....?
Veteran

Hey Guys!,
I've been taking things really nice and smooth with an old veteran that Im working to reshape but need some advice from those with more experiance. This horse was a flat 1D heart attack but after a bad change of hands, he ended up on my doorstep with the owners asking for a fix. He hauls a** to the first barrel and seems to get hung up for a sec and then runs the rest of the pattern like the pro he is. I dont understand what is hanging him up. I have to pull on him to rate or he will come into it too fast but it seems he almost has a pause on the backside of the barrel before completing the turn. I tried putting him on auto pilot and that wide the turn WIDE and a little smoother....He runs in a pretzel to play with his shoulders but glides through with a pinky finger after the first barrel. HELP! He does AMAZING slow work...maybe an exercise that could refresh his brain a little? Thanks

Sore? Check stifles and hocks for sure but it could be a number of things. But I would rule out soreness first. :

He has some mild arthitis from racing but I will look into it and see if he may need injections.

My gelding that would get hung up on second
(goes left first
) had a bad stifle and it would catch so his pause was anticipation of it catching. I am also currently rehabing and tuning a mare that has a tendancy to swing out and take a quick pause coming out of almost all her turns but more so the first and I have narrowed it down to stifles on her as well. So she is currently in a conditioniong program consisting of long trotting, going over ground poles, and backing....no circles and no loping for at least a week but possibly two depending on how I think she feels at the end of the week.

I've had hocks and stifles done... whirl bones done a few years ago
(someone said that once they are done, they don't need it again, is that right?
) I gave him the winter off, legged up really good, and still had a hang at speed... not during slow work. Spent lots of time getting soft and repectful at speed and being absoluetly sure that my hands weren't causing it. 2nd run tried a tiedown-- major hang but came around nicer. Waiting for another run then off we will go to another vet to check SI.
