| I know this is kind of gross.... but I am not sure what kind of worm this is. I worm my horses twice a year, Spring and Fall. Normally ivermectrin and panacur.. but this time I decided to worm with Quest. I was riding my colt yesterday and he stopped and took a...well you know... and I noticed two of these worms.. Can anyone tell me what the are? And should I worm him again in a month since he has them?

Location: North Dakota | BOT worms naturally migrate out of the horse in the spring. Their life cycle is to live in the horses gut over the winter and then emerge in the spring to continue it's life cycle through the summer. The little yellow dots you see on hair in the summer and fall are the eggs the horse ingests. That is why you should deworm in the fall/winter with an ivomec type dewormer to kill the larva that live in the belly over the winter. I don't think you need to use an ivomec now, since they are going out on their own. Safeguard/panacur is fine. |

Location: Memphis, TN | Were the worms alive? Quest (moxidectin) kills bots and is effective for 84 days after dosing. I would not hit him again with anything. If you absolutely must Ivermectin is what you would want to use. If you are concerned do a fecal and discuss with your vet. The Quest should be doing it's job though hence why you are seeing them. |

Yes, but, the bots are coming out anyway! You do not need to do anything for them unless you like spending your money. In the fall is when you want to hit your horses with a boticide. |

My vet recommends a boticide in the fall AND spring.
I'd rather that the bots came out dead than alive, at least if they are dead they are not continuing on their life cycle.
If the OP recently wormed with Quest the bot that was in the manure is either dead already or will be shortly.
We ultrasound a lot of mares here every spring and it is gross the ones that come in with live bots inside of them. Everything that comes in here in the spring gets a boticide.
We barely have any bot eggs on our own horses in the fall because of our protocol.

I agree that the horse that was recently wormed with Quest should not need another deworming since the bots are coming out dead.
However your previous post (that I may have misunderstood) said that boticides should be given in the fall. While that is true-- they should also be given in the spring to kill any internal bots that were not killed during the fall deworming, or started to develop from eggs that were ingested after the fall deworming if they were not removed from the horse at that time.
The live pupae that are coming out in the manure this time of year are soon turning into the nasty flies that lay the eggs later on and start the cycle all over again.

Ivemectin or Quest (Moxidectin) will kill bots.
It will say right on the label or tube if a wormer is effective against bots. |

Location: Muskogee, OK | If you just wormed him it is very likely it is a dead bot that was killed by the dewormer... Completely normal and I would not worm him again. It means the wormer you used is effective! |
