Hubby's commuter car may have died last night. We've been looking for an SUV for our family of four. I've been browsing online for used ones. Of course, I'm used to shopping for pickups, and could tell you how much a good Dodge is worth, but know nothing about SUV prices. Been using Kelly Blue Book to research some, but they seem low on their values to me.

How many miles is too many for a used vehicle that will have to be financed? Seen every where from 100K to 25K in the price range I am looking at (under $25,000) and haven't quite found what I'd like to have. Would like a 3rd row seat and AWD. Really not stuck on one brand like I am pickups.

Thoughts?

I have an 05 Ford Explorer with the 3rd row seating, push-button 4 wheel drive, all sorts of bells & whistles, and it has 171,000 miles on it but is still going strong w/no troubles. I personally wouldn't worry a lot about mileage on an SUV like I would on a pickup, I know I use my pickup a lot harder than "Dora." I've had several SUVs - a couple of Jeep Cherokees and two Explorers plus my parents have a Chevy Blazer. The Explorers are by far the most comfortable of those 3 SUVs.

I thought financing was based off year of the vehicle, not mileage?

My Escape has 308k miles on it. It does not have 3rd row seating but it's pretty BA. It's a beast in the snow.

The new Explorers are sweet, and so are the Edges.

I would use nadaguides.com,  KBB is a scam.

Make sure you run a Carfax report on any used vehicle you are considering...  Lot's of scamming going on with turning back the mileage.

In my opinion, mileage isn't as much as a factor as it used to be; cars, trucks, and SUV's last longer on average, if they are properly maintained.

Mileage will affect the overall value of a vehicle according the price guides (KBB, NADA, Edmunds, etc)

I have a 2004 Yukon Denali XL that I bought in January of 2013; it had 105,000 miles on it at the time. It was a 1 owner vehicle that had sold new at the dealership I bought it from. It is all time AWD and has 3rd row seating. It doesn't get the greatest MPG, but does ok for a vehicle of it's size.

I would definitely recommend having a CarFax done on any vehicle you are considering. A lot of dealerships have them on their inventory.

Financing is based of the year and mileage. What a bank typically looks at is under 100,000 miles, however if your credit is good they will look at things up to about 150,000. 7 years old and newer vehicles generally get a preferential rate as well. We deal with banks a lot, so we get used to what they are looking for.

As far as finding under 100,000 miles, under 7 years old, and under $25,000, there is a lot out there. My friend has an AWD Chevrolet Traverse that she loves. It has the 3rd row seat, and when she got it used, it had low miles, and she even got a good color (red)! Except for a trim panel thing that warranty took care of, she has had no issues with it whatsoever. Maybe look into something like that?

One other thing...use NADA to research prices...they are a lot more fair to the seller and the buyer, and usually (at least in Montana) if you are getting financed, that is what the banks use. :

Good luck on your car search!

ETA: The newer cars have digital odometers, and the miles actually register in the computer of the car...so to my knowledge it would be difficult to near impossible to change an odometer reading nowadays.  Also, on something that expensive I would CarFax as well...but be willing to ask for the VIN and do it yourself if you come upon a seller that doesn't have one on the particular vehicle you are looking at.

The NADA Book / Guides are what the Lending Institutions use for valuing a used vehicle.

Per Jerry Reynolds, A Nationally Recognized Automotive Expert, AutoChek is more accurate than Carfax. However, Carfax is better than no research.

I don't know about the financing part of it, but we recently ventured into SUVland. I was driving a Ford Taurus, and while hubs Megacab would fit everyone, it wouldn't be pretty (the poor kiddo sitting in the middle of hubs and I wouldn't last long, I'm afraid). We looked at the wagon style (such as Pacifica) with a 3rd row, but with 4 kids the 3rd row would always be in use and there is no way I could fit dog/horse feed, or groceries for that matter, in the back with the 3rd row up. That was the same case with the Explorer even, and any SUV with 3 rows without the extended length. The Excursion I felt was too big. We ended up really liking the Expedition EL, which they first made in 2007. We decided that we would try for the Expedition and if we couldn't find one in our price range by spring we would look at others. We really liked the little things in the Expedition over the others, especially how the middle row is a bench seat, but the middle seat can be taken out for a walkway of sorts when the middle seat isn't needed. Also, the how the lights point down on the side seats...it really was the little things, lol. We were prepared to spend up to $15,000, but our prayers were seriously answered in a big way when we found one on Craigslist for $8,000 with 96,000 miles on it. It's not loaded; cloth seats, not a lot of upgraded power options, no DVD/navigation/etc., but I LOVE it and the family loves it. Simple at heart (less to break, lol) and will haul a 2h in a pinch. :)
Hope you find something for your fam!! I know how stressful it was for us, hope it's better for you

I have an 05 or 06 Ford Freestyle.  It had about 56,000 miles on it when I bought it and has a little over 80,000 now.  I get about 23 mpg just driving the 25 miles each way to work and back and got a little over 25mpg on a long trip last summer.

Mine is an AWD and has 3rd row seating.  I leave the back seat down and carry all kinds of stuff, feed, shavings, saddles, whatever, in the back, it has a ton of room.

Edited: I bought mine from a lady off of Craigslist.  She had bought it brand new, still had all the paperwork and everything for it.  Per NADA it is still worth close to what I paid for it 2 1/2 years ago.  I financed through the credit union I use.

I just bought a 2011 Limited Ford Expidition with 46000 miles on it for $35000. I absolutely love it! It has leather seats, the middle are bucket and the third seats three. I also have navigation and DVD players in the head rest. The only down fall is the milage, I get about 16 miles/gallon and 70 miles/hr (I drive hard) and I put on 80miles everyday going to work. It also handles great on gravel. I wouldn't  get anything else again, I don't think. I know those are the vehicles to drive around her and now I know why. I know some people who have had the ford edge, explorer and expidition and they say the like the expidition the best!
GOOD LUCK!

We just bought a used 2014 Chevy Traverse LTZ with 500 miles on it for around 32K. It has the third row seating and is AWESOME. I love this car. We had found a 2012 and 2013 with under 10K miles that were the same price as the 2014. Banks lend on year and mileage. Had we chose between the 2012 and 2013, the 2013 would have been the better option due to interest rate even though the asking price was the same.

My advice is to shop around. You can get some great deals if you shop around and don't rush into it.

I am still working on the mileage to see what I get. So I am no help there/

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 2013 Toyota Sequoia. Before we bought it, we were looking at 2008 and newer Sequoias and found some around 25-30k. They are super reliable, Toyota is a wonderful company to work with, and it seats eight. We are a family of three, soon to be four, and it fits us perfectly. There's lots of space and storage and it is awesome for our frequent road trips with a toddler.
