Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | Do you ever see dead opossums on the road being eaten by the birds??? Nope, that's because humans are the only creatures dumb enough to eat 'em. Shoot the ugly over grown rat and to heck with what the Game and Fish say....practice the SSS method of varmit control. |

Possums are perhaps the nastiest creature that I know of. They are scavengers (i.e. will eat anything and everything dead) and as docschic mentioned not even the vultures who are scavengers themselves will touch an Opposum! |

But, my sister lives in town where you can't shoot in any direction. They had a problem with one. They'd try to run it off, beat it with a stick, you name it. It just hisses at them. I told her to spray it with the hose. It RAN for the hills and hasn't been seen since. So, if you can't shoot it, and want it gone, they apparently do not like a bath. |

I'm still laughing that there are official game and fish rules about possums. In real life, that would never be enforced. |

Hungarian Midget Woman
Location: Midwest | These possum stories are killing me...
My friend had one cornered in the "cat house", ie this little box that the stray cats her grandmother fed liked to sleep in. It had been killing the cats, plus they had horses
So my friend's boyfriend goes to kill it... of course grandma wouldn't relinquish her gun, so he tries to stab it with a pitchfork while someone else is beating it with a shovel.... they got the job done, but let's just say in the process they also destroyed the cat house and ended up banging their own feet with the shovel several times.
It was quite the spectacle. lol |

| Monday or Tuesday evening I came home to a large peice of pvc drain pipe laying in my yard, long and at least 3" diameter with a curved piece on 1 end. I thought 'What the heck, where did this come from?'. Turns out my dog drug it over from the neighbor's barn and it had a small possum in it. She continued to drag it all around the house until she either got the possum or she gave up and it went away. The neighbors place is just a barn and pasture, no house, and she's been barking a lot in the direction at night lately. She's good at keeping the varmints away from the property. That piece of pvc was heavy too. I'll try to post a pic.

Around here, you would get laughed at for calling game and fish over a possum. |

And if for some crazy reason an officer wrote you a ticket, simply go to court, there's no judge in our state that would let that stick. Our state is experiencing high rates of rabies in bats and skunks (we don't have the raccoon varient here) and we "dispose" of every skunk we see on our place (and possums too, of course).

Unfortunatly Itsme is probably right...some wet behind the ears just out of school DNR officer would probably write a ticket, hence the SSS method. It's that whole common sense and authority to the head thing. |

Location: Home....Smiling M Farms | I run over every single one of those jokers I see on the road. I'll swerve to hit it (not endangering anyone but you get the idea). At home, I've always got my gun on me. SSS. If they are being sneaky, and I know they are there but I can't see/find them, I set out bricks of rat poison, deacon maybe? It gets the job done as good as anything.

Location: MD | I've always killed them if I see them but, I don't see very many. If I see a few hanging around then I'll leave a dead one out for awhile. No, I don't go running around killing every vermin I see. I tried to kill one with a shovel once and was beating it for a good while. I felt so terrible. I'd prefer to live trap them and then set them loose down by the river.
I don't mind killing it but I don't want it suffering, and I'm more concerned about my dogs health than that thing. If it was living under my trailer, I would be concerned that it would be making a home of it there. |
