I still think that Weir found a road kill Sea Gull and put it on his head. He is even too weird for me and I found them unnecessary.

As far as PETA, I know a little bit more but can't say who or where about what they pulled.  I will say that BOTH Steve and Scott are great, great horsemen.  If I run into a PETA person, I'm afraid how I will react.

fatchance - 2014-05-05 12:25 PM The Peta piece was needed. What Asmussen stable has been accused of has been all over the net and on some news stations. Why try to put it back in the box when it is already out. Address it and let the world know his side of the story.....( I will simply say no comment on what he said) There are HUGE problems on that tracks and it needs to be stopped.

Hey, I'll take your word for it that the track needs to be cleaned up.  I know very little about what goes on in a race barn.

However, PETA will never offer an objective news story.  They don't deserve the credibility Costas gave them.

Personally, I thought it was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time.  I laughed my head of at them back at the stables.  Obviously they are both afraid of horses.  I truly admire Johnny Weir for what he did at the Olympics.  He wasn't going to go and be a commentator until Russa passed the law making being gay a crime.  He knew he was too famous to be arrested, therefore his presence kept anyone else from being arrested.  I may not agree with his sexual preference but he stood up for what he believed in.

Maybe I need to clarify my statement.  I have no problem with Johnny Weir's preferences.  It really doesn't matter to me.  We will all answer for our own life styles in the end, that call will be up to God.  I just think it takes a time honored sport that has been respectful for many many years and turns it into a laughing stock with someone that is not horse oriented at all dressed like a fruit loop.  To each his own.

I for one won't get my panties in a wad over ice skaters being on the telecast. NBC had a 3 hour show for a 2 minute horse race.....that's a lot of time to fill, and I for one was entertained!!!(and I'm dang near as old as Roxie!!!!)

I personally wish they would fill the time with complete stories about all the horses, jockeys, trainers & owners not just the snippets we got about certain ones.

If we want to keep the Derby, Preakness and Belmont on prime time channels, than they need to pull in a wider audience, not just horse people. Tracks are closing down left and right, horse racing is not as popular as it was 20, 30 years ago.  It's just not.

If JW and Tara added some flair, funny back drop and made a handful of THEIR fans into horse racing enthusiasts, I'm all for it.  Jeez, now we are being the moral police for a major race!  It's the Kentucky Derby and big crazy hats, flamboyant dresses and just having fun at the race, is what it is all about.

If you didn't like their commentary, you could have turned the channel until the actual race.  My remote works like that!!

I actually watched bits & pieces & found that they both have a great love of horses & used to show arabians when they were younger & both were told to choose, show horses or ice skate & they both chose ice skating.  They even showed pictures of them when they were younger on their horses.  I think a lot of what we see on TV from him is all part of his act, anyway, I like to think so.

So this was the guy in white with the funny hat on? I turned off the DVR and caught the race on youtube. Just sick. The derby is supposed to be a spectacle, but a spectacle with class. I don't know who he is, but he had no business there.

I call him Johnny Weird.

It didn't bother me that much, that's the way he is. He's eccentric and flamboyant, and all those big words. And he's not afraid. Why should he be different because he was asked to commentate for the Kentucky Derby? I actually liked Johnny and Tara when they were commentating at the Olympics, he was way more positive and encouraging when someone fell than Scott Hamilton was (he drives me insane). Besides, I loved Johnny's outfits there too, I had to give hubby the outfit of the day report. (He didn't care, I just liked doing it. LOL!)

Ever seen the camera showing the infield on Derby day?  Johnny was mild compared to that carnival and those freaks.  Everyone try to rein yourselves in....he did no harm.

I looked online to see what he was wearing since I can't see the picture someone posted here & I didn't see him on tv.  He was actually mild compared to some of the other pictures that came up of this year's spectators.  Wowsa!  You all need to google those.  They make him look pretty tame.
