I gave vaccines two mornings ago, and rode my older horse yesterday evening. He was lethargic and couldn't move very well, which is unlike him because he usually bites me the entire time im saddling and tries to buck constantly while warming him up (i've had him 9 years). He couldn't turn well to the left, and after I rode I tried to flex him around to the left and he threw his head up. To the right he was fine. Could he have had a reaction to his vaccines? He was still like that this morning.

Yes. My horse had a reaction this year. He was not right for a week or so. Very stiff all over and did not want to move. He did not want to raise his head and was lethargic and also had a low grade fever. He did not get really bad until about 3 days after his shots. We gave him banamine and bute and he was better a few days later.

That is the main reason we give them in the chest. If they have a reaction & get a abcess you can bust it and drain it easier if it's in their chest. My horse reacted this year he had a temp and some swelling I put DMSO on it and gave him some banamine and he was back to normal the next day.

Oh boy, search for my post from about a month ago. I vaccinated 7 and had 2 end up abcsessing. It was horrible. I have a show this weekend and they are just now decent enough to go. They both have a scab where they drained. I have vaccinated my own for over 15yrs and never had one even get sore so this was beyond stressful for me. I gave Banamine, DMSO on the area, everything the vet said. I will try the pec muscles on them in the future just in case...I did give my show horse his there because he had, within the previous week, had an antibiotic shot in each side of his neck for a cut on his foot.

I have 2 that need boosters, neither of these 2 had a reaction, but I am still nervous.

My understanding was the chest muscles did not have as good of vascular supply therefore the substance injected into the muscle may stay there for a longer period of time causing inadequate blood levels in the blood stream.

I would suggest speaking to you vet before changing im injection sites.

I always inject in the neck close to the shoulder. I gave him bute this morning so I'll see how he is when I get home.

I had this happen last year to one of mine.  Vet recommended I give Bute prior to vaccinating this year.  I did this and had no problems this year.  I do usually give at least two days off after vaccinating.

My vet said that it is the carrier in the shot that many horses are reacting to.

My vet gives them in different spots so he knows which one they are reacting too if they do have a reaction.  I only do them every few years, so far no soreness.

my vet also suggested trying it in the chest next time.

I've always heard it helps to work them after giving the shot because it increases blood flow and helps distribute the vaccine and makes them a little less sore. I don't know if that's true.

I've got one mare that can't lower her head for about a week afterwards every single year. I always rub her down with liniment right afterwards.

One of mine had a reaction this year. He had a large lump on the side of his neck and was sore. I had planned on not running him that next day. The vet had me give bute and rub DMSO on the swollen part. The next more the lump was almost completely flat and the horse felt much better. I was able to go ahead and enter. I rubbed more DMSO that morning and again just before he ran and he ran like a champ. I will spread my vaccines out next year and try to alleviate him becoming lethargic.

I am very curious to know which vaccine/ vaccines is causing the reactions each of you speak of.

6 years ago my older gelding had a reaction to the rhino in the 5-way. his titers were so high from being given it all his life.
then this year both of mine had a reaction to the rabies. I've always done 4 or 5-way, west nile and rabies at the same time for 20 years...now I will do rabies separately because it seems like it's getting harder on them.

Mine was pneumabort, which apparently is known to cause reactions. I have never given this shot before this year.  I have always done the 5 or 6 way but the vet wanted to use this because she said it was better coverage for the current situation.
