I know there was a post before about someone using pea gravel under their mats. sounds like it would make the stalls a little softer and not so hard underneath the mats and I would like to re-do my own stalls now. How much gravel do you use, or how thick do you want it(a few inches deep or what)? and where the heck would I even go about finding pea gravel??

The stalls I've always seen had pea gravel/limestone under the mats

Tamped down limestone as level as possible then cut mats to fit my stalls. It has been the best thing I have ever done, my stalls are so nice now.

I have the Humane LokTuff interlocking stall mats.  Per Humane's recommendation, I put down what they call "crusher fines" or crushed granite or granite fines.  They should not exceed 1/8" in size, compact well, and provide good drainage.  You don't want anything that is going to shift around under the mats.  Installed to a depth of 4-5".  Compact well, use water to soak, tamp and level before installing mats.  Love my stall mats!

I've been down the pea gravel route and was constantly having to pull the mats and re-level the floor due to the pea gravel shifting all the time. I will never do it again. Limestone has worked the best for me and has held up the longest, its also really cheap in my area.

We are just about ready to do our stalls and were going to do crushed rock under the stall mats. Does limestone drain well then? And how many inches of limestone?
