What is the best to do for a foundered pony? He was foundered before we got him? We were not told about this before hand. He is around 7 year old. I put flip flops on his feet right now with duct tape. No way we can put shoes on him per the shoer. He cannot handle the nail going in. He is the sweetest pony with all the pain he is in. I put him on MSM that helped with his stiffness.

My sister's mini struggles with founder. Poor thing can't even get green hay. She has had luck this spring with the Easy Boot Transitions, which come in really small sizes. She cut down the extra pads you can buy too, which gives her lots of cushion. With the boots and Previcox, she is moving around much better!

My vet sent me to Dick's Sporting goods to get an exercise mat, which we cut up and duct taped like pads to her feet.  They seem to help a little but she is 26 and is having other arthritic issues as well.   I wish I could say they were helping enough to keep her comfortable but I'm afraid we are going to have to make a decision soon.  I will be looking forward to others suggestions and best of luck.

I would double check but I am pretty sure THE NitrOxide will help your pony. I would call up Bob from THE. He made some hoof slurry for my friends horse.

Be sure and take him off of any feed with sugar in it. He needs something with low sugar low starch and soak his hay for about an hour before you give it to him, to extract the sugar from it.

No sugar no no structural carbohydrates. Timothy hay is the best.

Invest in old Mac boots they will be a life saver. I have a chronic founder, she bruises easily and abscesses all the time. She is always in her boots. You do have to watch for thrush.
If he is thst sore right now, are his feet hot, any pedal pulses? If so call a vet as he is actively foundering.
You can pm me and I can tell you what we have done for mine. It is a long process but is worth it.

You need to trim every 3-4 weeks

could also check for insulin resistance.... we have a pony that has to be dry lotted in the summer. Last time he foundered he had to be on stall rest for months to allow his hoof to completely regrow. ditto to everything said above!

Yes I might just have to put him in the round pen it's all dirt. And give him hay to eat on.

I would also go with THE products. I had a mare on the NitrOXIDE that had foundered and it was really helping get her feet in shape to haul to her new home. I also just got in a new bag of Muscle Mass that Bob made for my boy's pony. He's a freebie until we are done using him from the neighbors. He is in his mid to late 20's and has also foundered. He is somewhat stiff, but his feet have been kept trimmed and in decent shape. We are going to keep him on grass hay in the corral and his Muscle Mass consists of blood flow (for his feet), senior (because he's an old dude) and also joint & arthritis. As with all THE products, I expect to see some great things.

Why the Muscle Mass also? His feet were not done right before me. But we are getting them done right now.

I know THE works. My mare change in 5 days helping her Ulcer.

My little guy didn't winter so well. He's not skinny, but not how he should be. So I decided on the muscle mass. It doesn't have anything in it that will make him overweight, but can help fill him out. It has lots of great vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It's an all natural supplement and comes with a money back guarantee.

Just make sure you don't over feed him. Our pony was foundered because the previous owners fed her a whole can of senior feed. She doesn't get very rich hay or else she gets sore, receives the right amount of grain and is only on a grass a few hours a time during spring and fall. She's fine once the grass has lost it's nutrients. Have to watch her to make sure she doesn't start laying down alot. She does well as long as she's being taken care of.
