Location: 31 lengths farms | Not sure if any of you want to follow but I figured I start a post about my mares journey hopefully to kidney health. She was diagnosed with a bladder stone April 17, made an appt. at UC Davis to have Laser Lithrotripsy done but in an ultrasound on her kidney's found she has 5 stones in her left kidney and one in her uretor that runs to the bladder. Her right kidney is clear. Was basically given two options, remove the kidney or take her home and put her down. Neither sounded good to me. Very nice vets, it isn't their fault I cannot afford to have a kidney removal surgery for my horse. So I took her home and have been doing some research on Herbs and Holistic medicine for kidneys. Had a hair analysis done on her also which of course showed kidney, lymph and immune systems were down so we have her on herbs for those. Since she started those her urine is now yellow (it had been clear and no smell to it at the point I took her to UCD) and has a urine smell to it, you'd think that wouldn't be so exciting LOL!!! In no other way does she appear ill, eating well, drinking well, full of her self and wondering why she isn't being ridden and hauled. Got some good information on here as well, looking into Ammonia Chloride to lower the PH of her urine. Then spoke via text to a woman in Utah that does a lot of natural healing type stuff with equine, she herself had a futurity colt that was diagnosed with kidney problems their futurity year, they kept him on Yucca Extract, Uva Ursa leaves, essential oils and used acuscope and myopulse. He ran until he injured his hock at 18, is now 22 and still doing well with the therapy she gives him. She is willing to call the woman that does acuscope here and talk to her about the protocol they used on her horse. I'm hoping things are looking up for us. I've spent the last 11 years caretaking for my mom and hadn't really been able to run much, maybe 4-5 runs in a year the last 5 years or so. My mom had a stroke in December and ended up having to go to a facility which was tough to deal with but also selfishly it has freed me up to start going again. Now my "someday" is finally here and my "someday" mare is diagnosed with kidney stones, didn't seem quite fair but we all know life isn't always fair. I thought we were in for the fight of our lives 3 years ago when she fractured her patella but apparently that was just a warm up for the real fight. The good thing that came out of that is I know this mare inside out and we are a team in the truest sense, if any horse can come thru this, it is her. She amazes me everyday with her grit and guts. As long as I ask the questions and do the research she still has a shot at doing great things someday.

Location: 31 lengths farms | I thought originally that she was having a very hard heat, then one day after taking a lesson when she urinated it was bloody. At first the woman I took the lessons from thought she was or had tied up but this was almost straight blood, not dark urine and she continued to move fine. We treated her like she had tied up just to be safe. 20 minutes after she passed the blood, she urinated again and it was regular urine. I was hoping after doing some research that it was a bladder infection but had a feeling it was not so took her to the vet I have for my more involved issues for an ultrasound.
He feels that often horses that on and off act colicky are horses that probably have kidney stones, she has never had that issue so far thankfully :-)
Thankfully also God has put some good people in my path with her. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | CC has been on the kidney, and lymph herbs for 10 days now. Saturday I hopped on and rode her just at the walk for about 10 minutes, from everything I've read getting a horse with kidney stones exercise is important but we kept it quiet and slow. The last time I tried even that much on her right before we went to UC Davis she had to pee about 3 times and she passed a bit of blood the last time, hence the reason I stopped. Saturday the ride did not cause her to have to urinate, though after I rode and let her roll, she did but there was no blood. Sunday I rode again, this time asking her to trot about 50 feet and she actually picked up the lope the next time I asked for the trot, I of course stopped her and waited for the "I have to pee NOW" response, did not come. Finished the ride quietly, let her roll and about 15 minutes later she did urinate a nice regular color stream, no blood. Hoping to get the protocol for the acuscope on kidneys passed along here soon, but looks like we are headed in a good direction. The plan is to finish the bags of herbs, have her hair tested again, and go from there. Planning on having her kidneys ultra sounded again in the late summer/early fall. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | She has put back on a little weight also, she is a horse that never really carries extra anyway and her appetite is tied to how much work you get her.
This was from about 3 days after we started her on the herbs :-)

Location: 31 lengths farms | Still haven't gotten the protocol on the Acuscope for her BUT she has been doing very well. Have been riding her lightly a few days a week. Tuesday she was able to trot a few laps around my worked up area that is roughly 50x80 and we loped a few 20 foot circles on each lead, letting her stop between direction changes in case she felt the need to urinate, nothing. When she did urinate about 5 minutes after I put her up it was clear of blood! |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Okay, so last night I asked her to trot a little longer than I have been...when I changed directions she pulled her old "lope???", I broke her back to the trot and trotted a ways further at which time she asked "Lope?" again (she does this little half skip/lope thing when she does this..) so I loped her in a small-ish circle, then broke her back to the walk to check to see if she needed to urinate. Nothing, so I picked up the trot again and she asked for "LOPE!!!?", this horse thinks she was put on this earth to lope, LOL!!! It is her preferred method of travel even in her pen, so we loped a bit bigger circle, broke her back to the trot and headed to trot the pattern, as soon as we were headed towards the first she yelled "LOPE!!!!!" so I let her slow lope thru the pattern, finished and walked her out waiting to see if she would need to urinate and if there would be any blood with the increase in activity. Nothing. Unsaddled her and took her back out to let her roll, she rolled and then urinated a regular flow of urine, no blood and a good volume of it also!!!
The other thing I have added to her herbs in an herb called Chanca Peidra, smells horrible but it is referred to as "Stone Breaker", figured we had nothing to lose even though I hadn't found anyone that had used it in animals of any species. |
