I thank God I was there that day she passed the nasty stuff or I dont' think we'd even know anything was going on yet, she never came off her feed, she continued to behave like her usual half psycho self in the pasture. Heck she didn't even have an elevated heart rate, pulse or temperature when we took her in. Doc seriously thought I was being overly cautious . And then she peed!!! She got her second dose of the Excede today...will go home at noon to check on her again. Her vet that did the bladder stone removal called to check on her the other day too, was very happy to hear her bloodwork came back looking so good and felt we are on the right track with our choice of antibiotics.
Great news. Love reading the updates. Way to go ! |

Location: Texas | Yeah Baytril is a very strong antibiotic that can cause diarrhea in horses, so we try to be prudent in our use of it.
Excede is a 3rd gen cephalosporin which will give you more gram negative coverage than penicillin will. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | So my fiance was up early this AM watering the garden and then decided to fill horse tanks and hose the horses down just 'cuz, LOL!!! He said CC came over and put her chin on his shoulder, this means scratch my neck by the way. So he said he was scratching her neck, hosing her off with the other hand and he asked her "Do you feel better buddy???" He says to me "she said yes she does." This is so out of character for him...not the hosing them off or the scratching them but the "humanizing" them like they really talk. Gave me goose bumps to tell you the truth.
Thought I'd add a picture of her too since I haven't posted one in a while ,I think she looks pretty darn good for all she's gone thru, especially lately.

Location: 31 lengths farms | Not sure what I would have done without Dave thru all of this. He has a natural quieting effect on both humans and animals. He and CC made this journey easier to bare by far, Dave's quiet balanced CC's fire and kept me relatively sane. After her little set back a week ago or so I started to ask "when will this end???" And realized with her kidney it will end when it's truly the end, so therefore embrace the set backs and challenges because as long as we have them it means she still here. Here's to our journey' |

You said that perfectly. . . . I need to take that to heart and remember it when things get tough. "Here's to the journey" |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Took her for a short ride today, walking but she is kind of a failure at that after having time off so our walk looked a lot more like jigging and jogging and a few "airs above the ground" type moves:) Watched her for about 10-15 minutes afterward and she never had to urinate. Checked again about 1/2 hour later, she was busy eating and one good size puddle with little to no gunk visible. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | We did the 3 doses of Excede, her kidney vet wanted me to follow up with 10 days of SMZ's and we did that. Few days later I saw some stuff I didn't care for in her urine again. Got a hold of the lady we buy her herbs from, asked her about an infection fighter, got one and got her started on it Thursday morning, haven't seen any gunk in the urine since, rode her again yesterday and she was back to her fire breathing dragon self. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Things are still looking good...I used to just walk thru her pasture to count wet spots, now I've taken to taking a stick and digging thru them too. What we don't do for our animals huh??? |

Location: 31 lengths farms | We've had some ups and downs since late July...had the UTI issue, were she was on Excede then a follow up with SMZ's. About 10 days after she was thru with the antibiotics we had found some more gunk in her urine, had a sample done again, no crystals, no infection. Tried not to panic, put her on Equisure as it has some collodial silver in it to support her immune system. The gunk has cleared up the last week or more and she her weight is holding nicely still. She is scheduled to go to UC Davis is November for an ultrasound on her kidneys again and her bladder. Her vet there doesn't seem to be too concerned at this point about because her bunn and creatine levels are good along with every thing else from her blood work. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Thank you both, she looks great, been riding her but not making any runs on her. If I hadn't found the gunk in her urine spots I'd be none the wiser that something was going on as far as her behavior and appetite. Her kidney vet did say that she may just need to have a round of antibiotics run thru her every so often though I'd really like to stay away from that if we can with immune support but will do what is needed for her. |
