There's all sorts of cocktails they can inject. It really depends on what you've got happening in there. My gelding gets his hocks done every six months and his cocktail for each hock is: HA, DepoMedrol, and Vetalog.

I wanted to add: my gelding doesn't have any issues other than just general soreness from being 15 and being a barrel horse. He has no chips, or prior injuries, or anything like that. The injections are just to help him be more comfortable, as he is not UNSOUND without them - he's just not comfortable.

Depomedrol in the lower hock joint (low motion). My vet feels adding the HA to such a small area (as the joint capsule for the lower hock is small) is a waste of space, and a waste of money]. I also give IM Pentosan.

If you are talking upper hock joint (high motion), I would think most use just HA, but I do not have any experience with this type of arthritis. My horse only had changes in the lower hock.

I think different people will use different mixes, so best ask a lameness vet your trust.

Depomedrol is an old drug and should not be used in joints IMHO. The reasons are there are better drugs such as trimethsinalone which research has actually shown to help promote cartilage regeneration, whereas depo has shown the opposite. Depomedrol also has shown to prevent joint fusions, naturally, chemically, and surgically, as even when metastasized by the body, the residual chemical inhibits cellular regeneration.

My vet uses trimethsinalone and HA (hylartyl 4) in all joints
