Bit problem, or training problem??

I'm having some issues with one of my newer barrel horses. I just started him this season, and he has been doing absolutely amazing other than the two really big issues I'm having.
One, he does NOT stop. I pull the hardest I can, and his chain under his chin is tightened up as much as I'm willing to tighten it. If i tighten it anymore it WILL blister him and I refuse for that to happen. Him having issues stopping wasn't a big problem at first because I had plenty of room to let him slow down when I got out of the arena, but now I don't have that much room at the shows I'm attending.
Two, he HATES turning right. I have to push and pull him so much harder than when I turn him left. And since I run the barrels to the right-hand side first, he's completely blowing it out, and I want to keep him turning the other two barrels to the left since it's his better turn.
I'm just wondering if these are issues that can be quickly nipped in the butt with a bit change, and if it is what kind of bit should I use. I've been using a broken bit.
If not, what are some ways I can fix it while I'm practicing.

My questions are.....
Was this horse broke enough with the basics before he was started on the pattern? AKA does he understand what your asking and do you know how to ask it?
Has he been checked for any soundness/soreness issues?
Do you have a video of your runs?
A bit change will do no good if the horse doesn't know what your asking and/or you don't know how to ask it.
FOR ME and training my horses my body & voice are the cue makers
(voice cues I engrained in my ground work
) , the reins are a last option...

I would get a professional in your area to help determine if the horse needs more basics or a tune up.

If hes not turning to the right and hes not stopping you should NOT be running him. Hes either A
) sore...not turning not wanting to stop. or B
) not broke enough to be on the pattern. How are his circles to the right? What does he know before you started him on the pattern? I would rule out any soreness/pain issues then go back to the basics. A bit is not your issue...
