| adult (5yo) got kicked where her umbilicus would be if she were a baby. Thought it was hematoma but took her to work with my any ways to check on it. Looking at the ultrasound through all of the edema was hard to tell if its actually tore or if she has a natural defect in her abdominal wall from her umbilicus as a baby BUT it did look to me and to the intern that there was intestine poking through or just right up next to the abdominal wall. Palpating it you feel a 2 finger indent but you cant push up in there like a normal hernia where you can push the intestine back in. It feels like a smooth indent, not a hole. Had a vet there that has been doing this a while to say the least and he thinks its an old indent caused by an issue with her umbilicus as a baby and just so happens to have a hematoma over it where she was kicked.
Called Oakridge and talked to the vet that has seen her before for something totally different (yes I work at one clinic and take my horse to another). The vet said it doesn't sound like a true tear to him and he wants to let the edema go down and ultra sound it again.
So as of now she has a belly wrap on to try to encourage the edema to go down and if there is an actual tear, keep ant intestine from coming through.
Here are my thoughts: Whether it is or is not a hernia I really don't want to do surgery. I found several stories and products.. ect about people wrapping their horses bellies in basically compression wraps and doing lots of long trotting and the hernias healing on their own or at least closing enough to be so small there is little to no risk of intesting getting in (less than quarter). The actual product that is reusable/ washable/ sturdy is about $500 for a horse the size of mine but today at work we just put a big cotton pad over the edema and wrapped her in elastikon (which is like $10/ roll but may only need 3? per wrap).
I started her on THE Nutra Wound today. She gets some everyday in with her Muscle Mass Special Blend so hopefully I'm ahead of the game.
Basically.....has anyone ever had to deal with this and how did you solve/ fix it? What do you think about the belly wrap thing? |

| I had a 2yr old filly that ended up with a large hernia after having a cold that caused her to cough severely for several days. I wrapped her with vet wrap for a week maybe a bit longer and she healed up just fine. She is currently in barrel training and has never ad a problem since. |

Location: Oklahoma | I have had an adult horse with an abdominal hernia. Are you in Oklahoma? I know you said you didn't want to do surgery, but I had surgery done on mine by Gary White at Sallisaw. It was VERY reasonable, I want to say $200 or less? Now that has been about 15 years ago so I am sure it is higher now, but still quite reasonable by Dr. White. There was no muss, no fuss. I was very happy with the surgery. |

| I got quoted $1000- $1500 if it was small enough that he could just suture it together, $3000 range if he had to put mesh on it.
How much stall time did y'alls surgery require? He told me 60 days no exercise with surgery and from what I have read if you belly band them its actually better that you keep them exercised to continue to strengthen the belly wall and to keep "the blood pumpin'" for lack of better terms. |

| So I don't know if this helps lol but I have gotten a few more testimonials of belly bands working in a few weeks and I got another quote of $500 as long as he doesn't have to take out any intestine. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | If it is a true hernia, have the surgery. Different part of the intestines fall through the hole creating colic,swelling and other damage. Do a google search for more information. I had one done it cost me $150 check with your local vets. |
