Ok so warning this is long lol......one of my horses is a yearling filly out of my Bully Bullion daughter and by Fuel Charger...she is 14.2 or 14.3 hands...13 months old...growing exponentially....her diet consists of all the grass hay she can eat and she gets safechoice original twice a day per label/weight and a good vitamin n mineral and omega supp top dressed for extra fat...she also gets msm twice a day as a preventative for joint inflammation since she is growing so much...a week ago she had been getting a big flake of alfalfa morning and night as well but I cut it off cold turkey because I was worried about her growth rate and getting too much calcium...
Well yesterday I noticed at dinner time that her mouth on the right side was bothering her pretty bad...I looked but couldn't see anything..no swelling..no smell..no blood..she didnt want me to touch it at all and had extra saliva in her mouth...I figured maybe some baby teeth coming in or something but was keeping an eye on her...then this morning she was interested in her food but had issues chewing and mouth still hurting...shed eat a few bites and stop same with hay...so then at lunch I go to check on her and seems fine except mouth pain still present so I decided to turn her out with her buddies...I watched her grab a couple mouth fulls of hay..drink some water..walk around..then she rolled...took a minute or two before getting up..but then walked and rolled again..and again...and again...now im nervous...shes kicking at her belly..swishing her tail..grinding her teeth..obviously in a lot of pain...I catch her put her backmin her stall she tries to roll again before I catch her mind you her stall is 15 x 15 inside with a 15x20 run off of it..so at this point I call the vet..hes 45 mins out says to give her banamine and hes on his way...I give her the banamine and then while im holding her I notice her muscle along side her spine on her left side from her shoulder to her hip is so tight...like ridiculously tight..its now raised up 1.5 inches higher than her spine or other side and twitching visibly constantly...apparently shes having some sort of muscle spasming...very severe and painful...the banamine kicks in in about 15 mins and it helps a lot...vet gets there he can still see it..gives her a bit more banamine...it settles down..she is visibly relieved...he sedates her to check her mouth...since that was issue before and on top gum inabout a 3 inch section it is red and bruised...looks like she either banged it or got kickedm
(keep in mind no external marks or swelling
)...so we think the issues are completely separate...maybe a fluke she had both...could be she was jacking around in the pasture yesterday and tweaked her back and hit her jaw...could be alot of things...anyone had these 2 issues coincide with each other? Or any ideas on what root cause of muscle spasming was? I am thinking it was cutting off alfalfa cold turkey and calcium levels dropping...hypocalcemia type thing...vet leaning to her tweaking her back since she had banged her jaw..im stumped and a little worried as I've never seen muscle spasms like that ina horse let alone along her back muscle...she carries no hypp lines...not thinking pssm since shes not on a high starch diet... just looking for input!!

Check that alfalfa...is it late-cut? The mouth issue sounds a lot like blister beetle issues, as does the colic symptoms. The back I'm not sure about aside from aggressive rolling might of injured or strained something. Hope all is well!
