long story short my black gelding has become progressively worse at being buddy sour... hes in a separate pasture where he can see others but not come in contact with them... when i haul him he naturally sees his buddy but we stay apart from each other from that point on... but hes now just trying to go to any horse he can... hes bowing off his first and second trying to go to the alley to get to the other horses... what else can i do???

Any time I came across a buddy sour horse I would work him hard around other horses and let him rest away from other horses. Eventually he will figure out that being alone isn't so bad.

No.. you have that backwards... if he wans to be by another horse.. have your friend stand still and make him lope circles around that horse, do rollbacks, reverse flex..anything to make him "work"... then walk away and let him rest AWAY from that horse.. he will eventually figure out if he wants to be around another horse, it will mean work.   Once you walk away to relax if he want to go back or nickers for that horse, take him back and work his tail again.. then walk away and let him rest.

Yep!  That buddy needs to be an unpleasant place for him to want to be.

I have a similar/different situation. My daughter's 22 yo gelding had a previous home where he didn't see another horse for over 5 years. If I work one of the other horses where he can't see, he paces himself into a sweat. If I take him to a race, he FREAKS out if I try to warm my other horse up or make a run. To the point where he has to be isolated in a pen, he will rear and paw and scare people. My poor timid little girl won't go near him like that.

ETA: he is absolutely perfect when he can see another buddy. Careful with kids, no spook, no NOTHING. Except for this he's a bombproof, lazy kids horse.
