tips for lift and conditioning

So I have a 4 coming 5 year old that I am gearing up to start barrels with! He's really trainable and responsive. Gives at the poll, bends, forward moving, really coming along well.
The only thing is when he's collected and soft in my hands at a relaxing pace I can get him to push from his hind end more and stay up in the front end. However when I push him out and try and get some speed he feels heavier in the front and leans on the bit. Is he just not in shape yet? Are there tricks other than bending, leg yielding and rollbacks that I can use to teach him to lift more up front and drive the hind end for more speed?
He's mostly cow bred but does have some speed bred in him. I'm not sure how much potential he has yet I just want to do everything I can so he can reach his peak. Any good conditioning tips specifically for racing shape? I've heard lots of trotting and rating exercises. PS I have him in a 3 piece twisted snaffle!
