I would say people that dont make a living and dont haul every weekend would be fine with a entry level trailer. If you just,go a couple times a month it would be nice to,have that quality of trailer. But i do love my mangers and love my 8 foot wide also my trailer has extra wide stalls like 40 inches, my 16.0 hand 1250lb gelding has plenty of room.
It is an exiss it was ordered by a dealer 14sw upgraded cabinets, ducted heat and air, xtra wide stalls and only been used 5 times.

I think I've decided on Platinum... My husband is really liking the Lakota trailers, but I'm not sure I'm fond of it.. I've never been in one or know anyone that pulls one. He likes the idea of being able to get a slide out for the cost of what we're looking at in a Platinum and already have an awning included. The trailer will mostly be for me and use at 2-3 day shows thru the year, but my husband will most likely be taking it elk hunting for 1.5-2 weeks out of the year... so then it'd be used for two men, three max. Would the guys be able to set up their cots (they're usually in a tent) in the slant area and maybe run a space heater for warmth? I'm trying to not get anything larger than 8' SW as this will mostly be my trailer and I don't want anything too big.

Does Platinum put LQs in, or do they just build the base model and the dealers send them off? My husband was talking to a dealership yesterday and they have one coming at the end or beginning of September, but I think it still has to go to the conversions place... it would be 7'6" with 8' shortwall.

Or... I have found a ready to go 8' SW Platinum (pretty much same trailer, just has a hayrack added, but no stovetop)... that's only 7' wide. Are those 6" of width going to make a world of difference? Everyone says go with 8' W, but everyone I've found is just a bit too out of budget.I'm not too worried about the hayrack as I'm only hauling one horse and I think it'd just be easier to add the stud divider and use front slant for storage.

I've also found an Elite that I really like. It's an 8'8" SW. It has a foldout couch (that would be nice to have for my mom in case she decides to go w/ me overnight.. or one of the guys to sleep on while hunting) and already comes with an awning... but I'm pretty sure it's only 6'6" W. That's going to be too small, right?

.. & then there is the Cimmaron. Would love to have a Cimmaron, but I've found them to be just a bit out of budget (now wanting to keep trailer around $40k). This on is about $5k over what I wanted to spend.. but it might be worth it? I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about them. Already has stud divider & awning. only downfall is no mangers...but I'm only hauling one horse... surely that's enough room for all my stuff??

(I'm sorry everything is crunched together... can't seem to get the spacing to work!)

you might remeasure the elite.. I dont think they come only 6 '6 wide for the type your looking for ?unless its a straight load..which it may be.lol..
I have always had 8 wide as well. Id not go less then 7 and half wide.. for horses or you..

I think it depends on your situation. when I started looking years ago I was set on getting a top of the line trailer but could not justify the cost. it was easy to qualify for financing and i could string it out over 15 years but it made me sick to my stomach. after years of waiting and sporatically looking at new to near new trailers, we decided on an older top line trailer but could never get what we wanted. finally a dirt cheap older entry level trailer came up and yes it had issues and needed a little money but my hubby is very handy and loves projects. we ended up paying 40% of what a good used trailer costs after we put a little into it. got way more trailer than we expected and were able to pay cash.

why we went the cheap route
I don't rodeo and only occassionally need a LQ.
I have a GN stock trailer and could rough it if I had to, never had a LQ so I am used to it
Hubby has a very strong skill set HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Welding and is not a procrastinator. enjoys projects

now because I went older entry level I would never consider a slideout

We bought a Lakota in 09. Up until last year, I loved my trailer & the customer service; but I now have an issue and they won't stand by in their warranty & I'm extremely unhappy about it.

No, the Elite is 6'8" wide, not 6'6"...this is a direct quote from their website:

The 3H Elite Colt SS Trailer is an entry level living quarters trailer that like it’s bigger brother the Elite Custom Trailer, will provide years of trouble free use. The structure of this trailer is engineered utilizing framing specifically for this size trailer. The lighter weight structure allows this trailer to be pulled with a ¾ ton truck. Rugged good looks with the durability you would expect from Elite.
STANDARD TRAILER SPECIFICATIONS:
  • 7’ Height, 6’ 8” Width, 23’ 8” Floor Length

Nevertooold - 2014-06-02 1:23 PM Cindy...I would love your input on using a toy hauler to haul horses as you know how trailers are built. I bumped the thread up.

I just had a trailer rep leave here and we talked about the toy haulers....regular toy haulers don't have the under structure to support horses, or the air flow, they are actually pretty flimsy, like most RV's....

There are some special made ones out there with the big RV in front and horse part in the back with normal stalls and drop down windows, ramp etc....I saw it at the USTRC last year, but I can't remember who does them.....now, the big enclosed car haulers with RV in the front would have the structure for the weight of horses, but then you need the stalls and windows added...maybe that's in the future to see something like that...

I'd do without mangers.... My friends horse feels cramped with the manger... He's the size of a giraffe. THe manger is right up against his chest.. Love the lakota

My horse is on the other end of the spectrum (midget!) and I'm not a big manger fan either. I was very lucky to have the use of a trailer last year when I was MRSD. The trailer was already set up according to what the trailer dealer wanted, and it did have mangers. I LOVED having the extra storage, but the mangers were way too high for poor little short Sting! He never looked comfortable in that trailer.

This is the one I'm talking about. I just can't see how it possibly be safe.

Normally, I have a lot of faith in what Kent (Mr. Truck) says....I bought the Supersprings he recommended for my 2006 Dodge when it was new and I've never regretted it, plus I've always bought the synthetic Amsoil oil, filters, everything for my truck from him since it was new, so I really have to give him credit for leading me in the right direction in order for me to run this truck over 500,000 miles problem free, which is my goal.....

However.....I feel like you do on this deal....it's true the floor might be reinforced, but have you ever looked at the wall and roof structure of an RV?......yes, this will get your horse and camping stuff from point A to point B, but holy crap, what if you are in a wreck....your horse is toast.....I go up to the RV auction to look at the RV's and I see all of the wrecked ones and it doesn't take much to cave one of those in.....I think I'll stick with a conventional LQ trailer......

Thanks … this was my concern as I visualized my horse walking up the ramp of a toy hauler and into the added stall boy (or whatever its called). Since that frame is removable, I was concerned about the noise it would make or what would happen if a horse decided to fight the trailer. I think hubby came to this same conclusion after looking at a number of toy haulers.
