Can you give Australian Shepherds Benadryl? I have one whos about 50 lbs, and keeps chewing his leg.. It was fleas, but that is taken care of, now he has a spot on each of his front legs that is aggrivated, and wont heal because he keeps chewing on it. I have some benadryl gel tablets that are 25mg.

Yes...Benadryl is very safe for dogs.  General dosage is 1mg/pound.  It does make some dogs drowsy like it does some people.

I would say that it may or may not solve the problem.  Sometimes what starts from fleas or flea allergy can become a secondary skin infection...or in some cases a lick granuloma can form.  We sometimes would have to give a round of antibiotics  to clear up any secondary skin infection...and sometimes a steroid injection to get things back under control.

Hopefully the benadryl will help.

Thanks for the reply.. I had been told by someone else that it was ok, but I wanted to ask here as well.. I know Australian shepherds cant have certain meds. I didnt think Benadryl was one they couldnt have.

I know certain collie breeds and maybe aussies have problems with people medicines. I'd call and ask the vet first.
Maybe he needs one of those big plastic collars that go around his head so he can't reach it to chew on it.

We have a blue heeler with the same problem.  He will stop walking across the yard to scratch.  Now that the fleas are taken care of, he still chews on his leg and had created sores.  He is an old farm dog and it is almost impossible to actually take him to the vet without him hurting himself.  I would try almost anything as this point.

Just a thought, you might want to treat the spots with Vetricyn.  They say it's helps hot spots and skin conditions.

My vet says that Zyrtec is actually working better and lasting longer.  Just an FYI....

Yes, you are 100% correct. Zyrtech (even a knock off generic store brand of the drug) you can give with breakfast and dinner as well! up to 2x a day. And works amazing. My english Bulldog has terrible allergies and this helps him great amounts. I either hide it in cheese, or some peanut butter.

Thanks!! I have been using Vetricin, but its not doing much.. I have even bought some "no chew" stuff from the pet store.. The fleas have been horrible this year, and it doesnt seem that the Comfortis is working like it always has. Thats where this started.. the fleas, then he just continued to aggrivate the spots once the fleas were gone. This is driving me crazy... I know its driving him crazy...

You might want to muzzle him as well to keep from chewing even with the allergy meds.  This way he can get comfortable and not be able to chew also.

good idea... I may have to make a run to the pet store tomorrow to get one. Do they make the ones they can still drink through, but just not chew? I dont know anything about dog muzzles..

I give my Aussie Zyrtec everyday.  He is pretty itchy too and it seems to help.

I would try a cone first, and see if that will stop him from chewing. Along with the meds. For me muzzles are last choice, they seem to stress downs out more than doin' good. Good luck!

Yellow Listerine will kill the infection and irritation on those "hot spots" that they are chewing.  Cortizone cream works ok too, but they lick it off before it has a chance to work.

Our Corgi can get 1 flea bite and itch for 2 months!  She's on flea prevention and we treat our yard, but we still have to give her benedryl to treat the bites she gets from time to time.  Without it she itches until her skin develops yeast infections - which in turn causes the hot spots and the cycle gets worse and worse.  Glad to hear Zyrtec works too!  The benedryl wears off faster I'm sure.  Can't wait to ask the vet about zyrtec!

the best ive found is Sulfodene you can get it at pet stores and probably tractor supply turn the bottle upside down on the sore so you get a lot on there and it will heal it up. Better for hot spots than vetrycin

I started giving my two mini aussies (just under 30lbs) childrens Claritin 24 hr 10mg 3 days ago. They have seasonal allergies. They start itching when my husband starts sneezing. Thier itching is cut WAY down. They feel so much better.
